work sick...

That's unenforceable - you can self certify for up to 7 days. If they tried taking disciplinary action against you for not producing a doctors note (or fit note as they are now called) you could take them to an employment tribunal - and you'd win.

I'm surprised you Union have challenged such a rule.

Last year I did have a day off before a bank holiday, I didn't realise about the certificate rule and was promptly reminded. I had a follow up appointment with the doctor and requested a note, he said he was quite happy to provide one but it would cost £50. Needless to say the company didn't pay and no more was heard of the matter.

There are NO unions in our place of work, the company refuse to recognise them. We once has a global email go round from a Union, within minutes the email system was down (not before i saw the email). It was down for about 3 days and upon return there was no sign of the email (all other mails were present though).

I am trying to think of the last time I was actually sick... apart from tiredness/depression I have not been sick for over 10 years

Ive had one day off in the past 5 years, i usually fall ill when i break up for a holiday :(, i had the flu 2 years ago ...over christmas.
The one day I have had off was due to work sending me home, i was so ill they had to take me home and leave my was at work.

Over 10 years at my last place before I took sick. That was from 16 and I hardly ever got sick then anyway and if I did I took holiday if I got sent home.

Then I realised what a complete and utter mug I was, when I saw them treat people with serious conditions like poo that had never had much sick.

No one ever believes you when you are off sick anyway, even when I've had operations people still think you are swinging one. Besides when you have kids your immune system gets the hammering all over again that it had when you were at junior school.

I've been working for 3 and a half years. Never taken a sick day. I've been quite lucky (or unlucky depending on your point of view) that I only seem to get colds at weekends or on days I'd already booked off.

I used to take a lot of sick days, but the last 2 years I have been doing a lot better. In the last year I have had only 3 or 4.

Oh to answer the question probably about 6 months.

My employer was very strict the first six months they have a no sick pay policy. Even if you are sick they will deduct it from your salary. Then after 6 months to 1 year it gets a bit better. But the best it gets is after 2 years then you can have a weeks full paid sickness. I had an operation last year and they would give me a week off and the rest i had to use my holiday or deduct from my pay. So i used up holiday.

So I don't realy feel too bad when I am realy not 100%. I could realy go in to work and feel like **** all day and do my job. But I just phone in sick instead, that is what is there for. I then am expected to work from home though, well answer emails and connect remotely if something serious.

If I were to take a sick day either immediately before or after a holiday/bank holiday break then I must get a doctors certificate.

That reminds me of my old work with football matches. We were virtually all-male except for one CS girl. As you can imagine, there were a few people there who were into their football and if they pulled a sickie on the day of an England match during the Euro or World Cup, the management would get funny about it.

You will call me a liar but on my kids lives, the last day I had off sick was in September 1988.
I've been lucky.

I thought I was doing well as my last was October 1994. I wouldn't call myself lucky though as I tend to get sick when I'm on holiday :/

I've not had a sick day for about three years, however when I do have time off for illness I do it properly 8weeks was my last ,mainly injurys, broken bones etc.
however our place has a far more lenient sick procedure,
we are allowed 7 days in a 13 week period self certified(paid), more than 7 days a doctors note is required, over these times your "stage 1" a note is made in your record and left on file for one year, any more sick over the allowed in the time is "stage 2" written warning, then again is stage 3 and the sack..

edit:also to note if your sick on holiday, these sick holiday days can be claimed back, got to love a strong union

It doesn't really matter what the HR policy is if it goes against employment law. If you're genuinely sick then you have protection in law, like if you get cancer they can't sack you because you'll be off for a few months.

They can put you on SSP but all that will be stipulated in your employment contract.

Haven't been off sick in my current job of 2 years, I did work from home once when I had a bad cough/throat though. Been working fulltime for about 11 years now and taken about 8 days sick in that time I think. Not sure what my longest period without any days off is.... I'll hazard a guess at 2.5 years.

Where I work now we are allowed up to 3 instances or 8 days in a rolling 12 month period. Some people think that is harsh but my previous employer didn't have sick pay (excluding hospitalisations) for non-management staff at all, if you didn't work you could either have pay deducted or take it out of your annual leave allowance.

I havent had any time off in 6 month.

At my work place its 3 seperate periods of sickness are fine, Have a 4th and you'll go to a probationary hearing.
