I'm getting married in the summer and my Dad has offered to pay for a family holiday (nearest we will get to a honeymoon with 3 kids) to a luxury hotel in Tenerife.

Anyway, I started working at a sixth form college last October and notified them that I will be getting married in the summer hols and then I have my honeymoon in October half-term. Unfortunately I didn't realise that my fiancés half-term (she's a teacher too) as well as my 3 kids falls a week before mine! I notified my new employer of my mistake and asked for a week unpaid leave and they have refused.

I doubt I have any recourse but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do?

It's seriously peed me off as now it means I can't have a honeymoon and the reason they gave for refusing is pretty lame!!! It's actually made me consider looking for another job :(

Absolutely nothing you can do, they've given you plenty of notice and are well within their rights to dictate when you take leave especially unpaid which is more of a favour than anything else.

So you've given them something like 6 months notice, and they are unwilling to budget?

Look for somewhere else to work.

I'm willing to bet you won't find many educational places that will give a week off in term time unless it's actual life and death.

Yes but if I move elsewhere then they usually honour holidays already booked. Plus I'm teaching IT so there's a lot of demand for my skills.

*cough*sick leave due to stress*cough*

lol

here is a question...Do teachers get paid leave they can take whenever or do they just have to take them within school holidays?

They just have to take them during school holidays. I can't think of an illness which would take me out for a week and has the side effect of a suntan :D

Well there's your answer...

stress will, doctors recommend taking it easy, what's easier than a short break :D

Any reason you can't go on holiday after getting married but before term starts? Prob b more expensive I guess but that's expected if you go into teaching.

A sixth form refusing a leave request outside of their (I presume 13 weeks a year) usual holiday schedule?

How unreasonable!

There are provisions for spending time with your kids upto the age of 18

Entitlement. Parental leave is unpaid. You're entitled to 18 weeks' leave for each child and adopted child, up to their 18th birthday. ... You must take parental leave as whole weeks (eg 1 week or 2 weeks) rather than individual days, unless your employer agrees otherwise or if your child is disabled

Maybe read the rest of the pages before giving this advice.. He doesn't meet the eligibility criteria and also they can easily justify the reasons to delay I.e take it in term time

Unfortunately there's not much you can do other than to leave / give an ultimatum (which of course wouldn't do your long term future at the school any good)

I'm not sure your employer is at fault at all here or you have any right to be annoyed at them. You ballsed up booking a holiday and you're expecting your employer to pick up the pieces along with the cost of covering your unpaid week at their cost (which I suspect is a fair bit more than they'll save not paying you?). You already have an exceptionally generous leave entitlement.

I guess you either give notice and look for a new job to start post honeymoon, cancel the holiday or meet with employer and see if a solution can be reached.
