Anyway, I started working at a sixth form college last October and notified them that I will be getting married in the summer hols and then I have my honeymoon in October half-term. Unfortunately I didn't realise that my fiancés half-term (she's a teacher too) as well as my 3 kids falls a week before mine! I notified my new employer of my mistake and asked for a week unpaid leave and they have refused.

I doubt I have any recourse but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do?

It's seriously peed me off as now it means I can't have a honeymoon and the reason they gave for refusing is pretty lame!!! It's actually made me consider looking for another job :(

Eh - have they already booked the thing, in which case it is mostly your own fault for not checking the dates with your wife.

If they've not booked it then why can't you either go in the summer or leave it till Easter holidays?

The fact you can't do this one particular week shouldn't automatically mean you can't have a honeymoon full stop.

Most places I've worked have bent over backwards to accommodate weddings and honeymoons, etc. even though sometimes quid pro quo and all that i.e. one guy did a double shift before and after having some days off for a related kind of reason.

It's a bit different being a teacher surely?

You know those school holidays when I have my leave boss? I've not bothered to check when they are and booked a holiday for a week when all those little people need teaching. Is that cool bro?

I would start looking for another job, and in the mean time take the week off as sick and face the consequences.
