Working 9 hours. What breaks should you get?

Retail work / shifts

10am-7pm = 1 hour and 30mins

1pm-9pm = 30mins

hate taking breaks any how so sometimes get it added to a balance and just take a few authorised hours :)

i have no breaks, as i want to get the work done..

would you rather your employer send you home for weeks at a time on full pay? how much of a break do you want?

lol you sound like the company i work for.

I've lost count how many 12 hour shifts i have done without a break, then to get called a militant when i say something:eek:

I'm a delivery driver & I'm required by law to take breaks, these breaks are recorded on my Tachograph. I'm required to take at least a 45 Minute break after 4 1/2 Hours of continuous or accumulated driving. If I don't then I could be fined up to £200 if caught. Some of the other drivers in my work, work through their breaks but I don't, I've heard stories of drivers being followed by VOSA officers in order to check they are taking proper breaks.

We've only just been allowed a 30 min break at my workplace after 8 years of service. 12 hour shifts too! Work in a CCTV control room.

I work 08:00 - 16:30

10:00 - 10:15 break
13:00 - 14:00 lunch
15:00 - 15:15 break

The day flies by :) Most of the time I will forget my 15:00 - 15:15 break or just go and play some table football

I get an hour unpaid lunch break for anything over 8hrs, below that it's 30 mins and below 6hrs it's nothing. I would die without a break, and I'm more productive when I'm not on the verge of mental and physical collapse.

Rest breaks - a break during your working day

As an adult worker (over 18), you will normally have the right to a 20 minute rest break if you are expected to work more than six hours at a stretch.

A lunch or coffee break can count as your rest break. Additional breaks might be given by your contract of employment. There is no statutory right to 'smoking breaks'.

The requirements are:

the break must be in one block
it cannot be taken off one end of the working day - it must be somewhere in the middle
you are allowed to spend it away from the place on your employer's premises where you work
your employer can say when the break must be taken, as long as it meets these conditions

Daily rest - a break between working days

If you are an adult worker you have the right to a break of at least 11 hours between working days. This means as an adult worker, if you finish work at 8.00 pm on Monday you should not start work until 7.00 am on Tuesday.
Weekly rest - the 'weekend'

If you are an adult worker you have the right to either:

an uninterrupted 24 hours clear of work each week
an uninterrupted 48 hours clear each fortnight

I used to work in a psychiatric unit for 18yrs, 14hr shifts with no breaks, we had to have our meals and smoke time with the clients, only time alone was to go to toilet....sumtimes???

Are you sure you weren't a resident :p

Nearly got into bother for not taking breaks at work once but it can be extremely difficult sometimes when it's hectic.

I work 8:30 to 17:00 and get 1 hour. Also I'm a VDU operator, so I should rest my eyes every hour for several minutes (usually means getting a cuppa or writing notes).

My last job was 8:00 - 17:00 with one unpaid 30 min break, but it was a very relaxed culture where we shoehorned in as much slacking as possible, whilst still getting work done quickly.

lol anter, u'd think i was after 18yrs of it. Apparently when we signed the ''working unsociable hours'' it waverd the breaks any company had.Plus it was a private company,We had no union, was a case of if u dont, u know where the door is .....

When I was working part time @ 4 hours a day I was allowed a 40 minute lunch break.
When I was taken on full time I have 3 breaks of 30 minutes in 8 hours, paid. Boss is cool though ;)
