Working in McDonalds?

No worse than any other job. In fact most people I know who worked there have siad it's better than stacking shelves.

Isn't it fairly good pay these days as well?

No, rubbish money im afraid. You get minimum wage and the pay "rises" always happen the same time (September) so you dont actually get a pay increase as it happens a couple of weeks before the minimum wage goes up.

Still, you can steal millions of happy meal toys and create a happy meal army in the Crew Room for fun to keep you entertained, or play cricket in the back with a broom and some parcel tape :)

Working in fast food is bloody hard work. I know of a few managers that regard it highly if you stuck at it. There's a few jobs like that in the retail industry.

I can appreciate its a past paced atomsphere due to the nature of the work. I don't doubt that once you get a couple of promotions, it can turn into a nice job.

Just above minimum wage according to a quick google. Not sure though.

It's not a great job, but it isn't degrading :/

no job is degrading i hate people who think people working as binmen , road sweepers , mcdonalds etc are degrading themselfs.

i bet the types with those atitudes frown at people on the door yet the people who are forced into so called "crap jobs" are equally demonised

Nobody is "above" any job. For the large part, jobs are what you make of them. This is particularly true if the employer is recognised as a good one. A lot of my colleagues spend most of their working day moaning about how hard they've got it when trust me, they don't know how good they've got it....

It's like the whitewash comments you get about call centre work from people who've seen an episode of Hollyoaks and think they know the whole industry inside-out.

It does. I was on £6.70 at Tesco. Apparently Waitrose and Asda are even better.

I get £6.66 an hour now, for being a customer assistant (lowest rank job) but as I only work a Sunday at 1.5x pay its £9.99 an hour, free shares each year and a 10% off card.

Don't bother with fast food places, go to supermarkets. At McDonalds when you are bored the only thing to do is have a frozen burger fight or eat nuggets, which makes you fat (again, talking from experience here).

I bet the 18-21yr old wage for McDonalds is barely above £5 an hour, the 21+yrs wage will probably be minimum wage or 10p over.

In 2006 when I was there on a Sunday at 6am I got £4.50 an hour when I was 18, so I jacked it in as Tesco pay on Sundays was exactly double.

My brother worked in a drive-thru Mc donalds and he hated every minute of it, but as its been said, a job is a job, not a hobby! if we all enjoyed work, it wouldnt be work, it'd be leisure.

I agree with the chap who said "it could be worse, it could be wimpy"....

Wimpy burger is always the highlight of stopping off at Tibshelf services on the M1.

I am doing some work in 7eleven here and I am surprised how enjoyable it is. No stress, tills are on a raised platform so get to do some good boob watching at night and friendly banter off the puffs. A few ****s come in but literally only one or 2 a day.

Not a career but makes me think if I ever want to go back into IT again.

I worked there for about 6 months between o levels and a levels. Boring work but had a great laugh with my work collegues, slept with loads of fits girls and got paid.

Tips are to try and get a backroom job if you can as easier than working the tills/grills.

Tip 2 is that back room jobs can go past closing hours on evening shifts so you get paid extra money to clean up etc.

Overall I loved my time there and I can think of many worse jobs than that.

Ok an update, I applied and just got an email, which was the following:

Well done – you have made it through to the next stage!

We’d like you to come for an On Job Evaluation (OJE) and an interview.
This will give you a chance to see what it’s really like at McDonald’s by working in a restaurant.

The OJE will take approximately 15 minutes and you will be given full instruction on what you will have to do.

After that, you will have an interview with one of our Business Managers, which will also take about 15 minutes. We’re sure you’ll find the OJE really interesting and a great opportunity to see what it feels like to work at McDonald’s.

Any ideas what to expect? Wear? etc

Edit: just read an attachment with the email and it says
"Wear flat, closed in shoes with low heels, these will minimise the risk of slips
and help protect your feet. Remember, floors in restaurants can be wet and
slippery at times."
Does this mean actual shoes, or would plain black trainers be ok ?

Wear black shoes, smart trousers and a shirt but no tie. That way you are not too smart but 'smart enough' if that makes sense. :) At a guess, most of it will be about food safety, general health and safety training and a chat about 'where you want to go' within the company.

Yeah, that's what I did. I was on a recruitment day as the store was new so we did things different but most of the peeps who got on were dressed in the their trackes so you can't go wrong with the above.

Mate works at McDonalds (for over a year now), he likes working there and it's very easy to get into, but the pay is dreadful, I get payed more than twice as much per hour while my job isn't anything noteworthy either... Wouldn't consider working there for the wage they pay there, especially as you'll probably smell of fried food after... Would consider it a last resort.

I'd highly doubt they'd care how you turn up, mate just turned up in white sneakers, baseball cap etc and got accepted easily.

Yeah that's what I thought. For people who know Sheffield/Rotherham it's in Canklow, which is like 10miles from my house :/
The trip there sounds a bit of a pain but should be worth it for however much money I get :)

I did it for 2 years while at college and it was awesome.! the work was crap and repetitive, but the guys i was working with (mainly other students) were a great laugh and had many a good night out with them and still to this day keep in touch.

EDIT:

i just wore the trousers they gave me and the polo shirt too.

And a pair of all black converse lo.

But the guys wore anything from smart black shoes to average black trainers you would ware anywhare.

I worked there for the 4 years i was in upper sixth to finishing uni. I did 2 nights a week term time and then mostly full time in the hols. by the 2nd year i was part of the low level management and by the 3rd year i was a shift manager (sat in the office most the time), cashing up tills/ counting the safe, shift scheduling etc etc

I had mates working under me that wanted certain shifts etc and i gave them to them. Point is, get onside with the mgrs.

I chose to work there becuase it was the only place that let me work the hours i wanted to. During term time i did 2 nights a week 6-midnight ish (closing time) which was perfect! every other job i applied for wanted a lot more commitment that i just couldn't give due to uni.

Mostly its a right laugh! a few of my mates were doing the exact same thing as me so it made it all the better. Yes there are some sterotypes of mcds employees and some are too true but for the most part they are great ppl that you end up goin out on the lash with.

The worsed part about it is the customers who think they are so superior to you. Maybe thats a bit unfair, not all customers are like that, just the ones i remembered :)

Id try to get in the kitchen if you can, working in there is a lot nicer then the tills/dining area. Cant stress that enough! the tills are the worst bit. Although were bonuses for taking certain amounts per hour on the tills.
