World Athletics Championships (Potential Spoilers)

Crikey, could the winner of the women's high jump look any more miserable?

Of course she is miserable. Her national team is banned through no fault of her own. She trained hard to represent her country and then has to enter as a neutral athlete and on winning gold has to face a flag that isnt hers through an anthem that means nothing to her.

In fairness, she did perk up on the podium. It was her face directly after jumping that I commented about.

Crikey, could the winner of the women's high jump look any more miserable?

As someone who wouldn't look out of the window if the Olympic Games was held in my back garden, I wandered by accident into a bit of the women's high jump when I turned the TV on, searching for BBC news.
While scrabbling for the remote, after dropping it on the sofa, I glanced at the screen and saw an angel run, jump, and clear the bar.
Transfixed for a few seconds, I looked at her name at the bottom of the screen, Yuliya Levchenko, of the Ukraine.
I said to my wife, "Nicky, if I don't come home one night next week, send a search party round to her place."
She laughed, "You'd have more chance of jumping over Nelson's Column, than getting lucky with her, you dopey old git."

Excellent run from Sally Pearson in the 110m hurdles. Shouldn't really be cheering an Aussie but she's good... :p

It was a brilliant run, I know little enough about hurdles but it was just so clean. What I liked was at the end when she couldn't decide what to do and whether she was happy to have won or just in shock.

China have apparently launched an appeal against our team.

Edit: Appeal has been dismissed.

Do you know what they were appealing about? The only thing I can think of was Mitchell-Blake on the final leg came very close to the edge of his lane when he started off but it didn't look like he'd crossed at any point plus the camera angles were terrible.

Brilliant runs by both the men's and women's teams, the women's team were at least in with a good shout of a medal based on the qualifying times but given GBs history of naff changeovers I'd not have been totally surprised if they hadn't. The men's result was something else, each man executed their leg so well and finished well deserved winners. It's a pity for Bolt and Jamaica - I couldn't decide whether I wanted a British win or a Jamaica win more to see him bow out with a final gold but it does rather sum up Jamaica's championships in terms of sprinting that they finished outside the medals and even if he hadn't broken down it looked unlikely he'd pull them to a win from that position.

Pity that Sir Mo didn't finish with a fairytale final gold medal but he's had a very fine track career and you definitely couldn't accuse him of not giving his all in that race.

But no doubt Bolt is greatest athlete of our generation.....

How are you measuring greatest? In terms of public awareness then absolutely, he has transcended sport and you can find any number of people who don't like athletics who recognise Bolt, to some extent his personality has made him a global star as much as his sporting endeavours. In purely sporting terms and dominance over their chosen sport then you could probably make a case for a few other athletes including Mo Farah for his six golds and two silvers at World Champs, double double at the Olympic Games and you can count or not the wins at the European Championships although the best in the World typically don't compete (apart from Sir Mo). But there are more, I am in agreement that Usain Bolt is one of the greatest athletes of our generation but I think he might have some competition depending on the criteria used.

I include transcendence....

Quite unbelievable really that ALL the track favourites failed to get gold or medal at all. Bolt, Farah (well he did in the 10K but not 5K) and Elaine Thompson.

Really bittersweet men's relay last night. Fantastic win by Team GB but oh so sad to see Bolt going out like that, particularly after not getting gold in the 100m. He really should have quit after Rio so that people's last memories were him at his finest. Also, I don't know why he didn't take part in the 200m as that's what he's always regarded as his best discipline.

I agree, you can tell he/she is holding back and just doing enough to win, i think if semenya went for it the worlds records in every event that they do is gone. So looks like been told to not go for them everytime semenya runs.

Wasnt even out of breath or even look remotely tired compared to every other 800 runner
