Andy Townsend is a disgraceful excuse for a supposed Irishman, needs to climb down out of England's bumhole.

Dodgy tackles starting to appear, there getting frustrated.

He's not even remotely Irish, only played for them because of the stupid loophole about grandparents ancestry.

This England performance has been poor, not one decent cross into the box, Heskey offside every 5 minutes, midfield not creating much at all. If Rooney's been quiet it's because he's not been given much to work with, no balls to run onto, no crosses. Saying that, there's 15 minutes left of this game to get a goal.

So much for Rooney our talisman btw, he's been utterly anonymous tonight.

Talisman needs a team behind him, I can't count any crosses or passes to him in good positions, he distributed the ball better than anyone on the pitch and was the player who won the ball for Heskey to assist the goal. England need to get back on the training pitch and learn how to cross a ball because it was simply horrendous tonight.

You would play 4-5-1 with a Rooney who hasn't scored in a competitive game for yonks?

He played quite a few England games (and Man Utd games too) injured at the tail end of the season. The whole setup isn't exactly geared towards getting the best out of him. You mentioned before that the strikers should be getting into better positions for Lennon's crosses, are you having a laugh? Lennon should be able to pick them out without overhitting them, or hitting them too high that nobody can head them. Half the time he doesn't even look up to pick anyone out, yet you expect the strikers to somehow get into positions where they don't even know the ball is going to land because Lennon's crosses can be so inconsistent.

He didn't have a good game yesterday at all, nobody will dispute that, but for the idiots in this thread to suddenly label him overrated, it's a massive overreaction on the back of the opening game.

Capello needs to push Gerrard forward, just behind Rooney in a 4-4-1-1 formation and play Barry and Lampard in central midfield with Cole on the left wing. It seems too blatantly obvious to everyone else that Cole should be playing on the left ahead of anyone else.

Well said Danny.

Most of the players are all capable of something special, they just haven't been able to show it so far in the world cup. Rooney was awful against Algeria, he couldn't control the ball, in the second half his passing got even worse. The guy looks absolutely shattered and when he was running it was as if he was running in sand. He doesn't look match fit but all the nations hopes are on him, the media have continued to build him up and he'll be their scapegoat as soon as England exit the world cup. He lasted a full 90 minutes 3 times since mid February for Man Utd when he got injured, yet Capello time after time played him in friendlies at Wembley on that god awful pitch while he was still not ready instead of using those games to have a backup plan up front.

Most of this falls on Capello and not the players, honest to christ why isn't Joe Cole playing on the left? Why isn't Lennon allowed to keep playing on the right without him being switched to the left? Why is it that every time the England defence get the ball, they bypass midfield by thumping the ball up to Heskey? Why is there so little build up play? And why is it that England have only really created 2-3 clear cut goal scoring opportunities in 180 minutes of this world cup?

Fact of the matter is this:

He's been absolutely cack in the first two group games.

England now have ONE game left in which to by some stroke of luck, progress.

Do you stick with the striker who not only did nothing in the first game, but managed to miscontrol every pass and lose possession constantly in the second game?

This isn't about hoping your media built 'star player' suddenly hits form. This is about doing all you can to make sure you don't make the same mistakes again. Rooney can come on as a sub. Dropping him doesn't mean disregarding him entirely.

Going by that description you could be talking about any number of England players. None of them have officially turned up yet.

Exactly why should any one player take the heat for the whole team

with that theory Terry, Gerrard, Lampard, Glen Johnson, SWP (who shouldnt be there in the first place) and "shaky" James should all be binned for the next game

Defending has been woeful - midfield has been non-existant, which has meant there has barely been a shot on goal and I dread to think what the passing accuracy is - 10% if we are lucky

Thats not down to one player

I expected this to be honest, I said it months ago. The media have to find a scapegoat, they have built him up for the last year, and on the back of two poor games alongside players underperforming too, he is being singled out for heavy criticism. If the whole England team were performing and Rooney was letting them down, then fair enough drop him from the team, but for people to single him out when none of them have performed well, and in 180 minutes of football to create 3 goal scoring chances is pretty shocking however you look at it. The current system does not suit a single player in the first team, not one of them, they all play different systems for their clubs.

The very fact that people are calling for him to be dropped just shows you how much people were relying on him to single handedly get them through each game. Two poor games, drop him. Well you know what, Lampard, two poor games, let's drop him too. Heskey two poor games, drop him as well. It could go on all the way through the spine of the team.

Mark Lawrenson and Guy Mowbray. Jesus help us they are horrific commentators. This referee could easily have booked Johnson and Barry, very lucky.
