World Cup 2010 - Quarter-finals **spoilers**

I do feel a bit sorry for Ghana but afterall they had the chance to win it and he missed, it happens.

I dont really think Suarez planned it, the speed in which that ball travelled in that distance I really doubt he thought it out. It would have been nothing more than a reaction that unfortunately shouldnt happen.

I expect he wouldnt be the only one to do it, as above certainly not planned and "intentional" as it were nothing more than a reaction.

Suarez would have made a great tag team partner with Los Guerrero's.

Uruguay know they only got through because of a blatant cheat. They don't deserve to be in the world cup right now. Suarez should be fined and suspended.

It was all the intentional. It looked like he was trying out for a volley ball team.

He is a no good cheat. lol.

Surely whether you get away with it or not has nothing to do with it being cheating. Cheating is the act, getting away with it or not is the result, they are two separate facets of the whole.

For example, if I hide an Ace up my sleeve in poker and then use it to win a hand, I have cheated. I've got away with it, but I have still cheated. If I win a formula one race with an illegal turbo I have cheated. If I run a marathon and use a car to do 25 miles of the route I have still cheated. If I pick up and move the white ball to a more favourable position while my opponent isn't looking in a game of snooker, I have still cheated. Equally if I get caught doing any of those things, I have still cheated. One is the act, the other the consequence. Two different aspects, but cheating.

Having said all of that I don't think he consciously put his arms up, I think it was an instinctive reaction. So I wouldn't say it was intentional cheating anyway, just wanted to point out that cheating doesn't require you to get away with it or not in order for it to be cheating :)

But the rules are the rules and "taking one for the team" is a viable option.
If he doesnt block the shot, his team are out, if he blocks the shot the other side have to convert the resulting pen.
I dont believe he did it deliberately either.

If one of the useless england players last week had taken one for the team and hacked schweinsteiger down and taken a yellow card rather than just let him amble past them all germany wouldnt of got their 3rd goal.

Still would have lost in the end though. :D

What does that possibly prove? They'd still have broken the rules.

For all the people saying it is not cheating because he got punished, sleep with your wife/girlfriends sister, after all it is not cheating if she stabs you in the eye when she catches you.

That's just playing on words. In that case every foul is cheating, which it is not. Suarez knew what he was doing and he knew what the outcome would be.

However I don't agree with the rules, and I believe we have discussed this issue on the boards before. I would like to see the rules changed so the ref can give a goal when it's as clear cut as it was last night, AND a red card, but in the case of Tim Cahill I would prefer to see the goal given but no card given(as I don't think he meant it).

Pretty disgusted with the result of the Ghana match as are quite a few here I see. Ghana deserved the goal, I had thought that the referee was allowed to give an automatic goal in cases such as this where the goal is only stopped by blatant cheating.

I like how both Argentinian players tried to block the ball with their hands, should have sent them both off and given the goal to Ghana.

EDIT: Another reason goal line technology should be implemented!

Arguably, every foul is cheating, as they're not clean tackles, but there's accepted degrees of fouls. It's a bit like driving offences... A careless foul stops play and gets a free kick. A negligent foul stops play, gets a free kick and a yellow card. A dangerous foul stops play, gets a free kick and a red card.

When I think of something being intentinal I think of it being thought out and planned I really dont think he could have done either I mean that ball travelled quite quick in a short space it was just a horrible reaction.

What OwenB said would be a fairer thing, it was a clear goal before that and a penalty doesnt garuntee a goal (as we see!) so maybe they need to look at this but then when do you stop.

Aside from the fact I wanted Uruguay to win yesterday, I don't see Ghana have anything to complain about...but that's because of how the rules are laid out and have been for years.

If Italy or Milan were eliminated from serious competition by a handball on the line and missing the resulting penalty I wouldn't say the rules are unfair and its completely wrong - I'd say we should have converted the penalty. I appreciate not many will feel the same way but I think panning Uruguay/Suarez for what happened is wrong.

The rules may need altering but exactly what do you do given that any change will lead to interpretations of future incidents where you won't agree with decisions leading to the new outcome which will also be deemed unfair on certain levels?

EDIT: The word from FIFA today is disgusting. Because they're so far up Africa's behind and desperate for an African nation to do well they're looking to ban Suarez for the final/third-place play-off as well. It wouldn't happen if Uruguay had been up against a non-African nation or one of the big countries FIFA don't like (Italy being one of Sepp Blatter's most hated).

I'm amazed at all the backlash against Suarez, it's not like he did something outside the rules of the game - he handled the ball in the box, meaning the rules were followed - a penalty, and a red card. Also don't forget the speed the game is played at, can people really say they've never done an instinctive handball in a playground kickabout, let alone a World Cup quarterfinal?

well its because a lot of ppl wanted ghana to go through. if the penalty goes in, theres no problem only because he hit the bar is it an issue.

i mean i drew ghana in my work sweepstake for a £50 top prize. i was ****** and jeffing at the screen.. but he missed the pen its simple as that.

i mean they arent querying that the kick was taken a minute into extra time of extra time. when there wasnt necessarily a minute extra to be played, the ref could have quite easily blown for full time inbetween him taking the penalty and it going in, or even before.

ive seen refs blow when its gone off for a corner. i dont have the rule book but as far as i know, a foul and taking of the kick is not included into injury time unless someone is actually injured abd recieves medical attention.

and football does not operate on a timer that stops when the ball is out of play, or dead, such as Hockey or american sports...

i also love how Marcel Dessaile is now pretending to be a big ghana fan or something when he opted to pay for france? you were born in ghana, why did you play for france and now suddenly glory support ghana when they have a good run at the world cup?

To talk about Suarez as cheat is just wrong, especially considering that few people are talking about the penalty that Ghana evaded conceeding themselves(unless if the ref didnt see it,it aint a cheat). He would have been a villain for Uruguay if Ghana made the best out of it but they didnt and, besides, everybody would have chosen to use a hand instead of simply letting the ball into their net. The guy has been a fighter all round he must do his country proud!

As for Ghana, they shouldnt have been out of their group but they had the inconsistent Serbia and Australia to thank for that while Gyan with his 2 out of 3 goals from penalties always made me chuckle when the commentators mention him from the list of favourites for top scorer of the tournament.

I think I want Argentina to win this one, but it's a difficult decision. Germany are our greatest footballing rivals, and they did knock us out, after all...

Yeah I think Argentina will win this one and then go on to win the tournament. Essentially I think whoever wins this match will be the tournament winners.

Indeed...makes me laugh that all of a sudden hes ghana's biggest supporter when he couldnt even be bothered to play for them...mind you hes one funny guy though....his celebrations are hilarious.

I want the Argies to win this as well...after all my next fave team behind Brazil but their defence is pretty weak and so far they havent been really tested by anyone...much like Brazil yesterday...their defence was supposedly very good but the Dutch picked them apart...well to be honest it was a free kick and corner kick that they didnt defend against very well.

Saying that it will be a good game...i just hope Messi plays like he normally does and fingers crossed he bags a few goals or at least one...definitely deserves one.

I couldn't support one and have doubts about the other but I will go with the Argies.
