World of Warcraft: Classic

The latest Classic build was put on the Blizzard CDN recently, I'd say the invites will start going out in 2-3 weeks. July 16th release date (supposedly).

I think I have already posted this earlier in the thread but will there be and OcUk guild? If so, what faction and what is the core theme based on? Riding/social etc
It's been a few years since playing retail and I am itching to get into classic as I never played it before. TBC was may first venture.

Why release in summer!

Why not? I guess their thinking is they want to bring in a younger crowd to see what all the fuss is about on a game they missed out on almost 15 years ago. That's a whole new crowd to bring in, no doubt streamers will pick it up if even for a few stupid play sessions. Makes sense, the original is DAMN addictive with the grind feeling a lot more rewarding. It's a smart business move if anything.

Biggest news is that the servers will be "layered" first few weeks whilst the initial rush happens until things settle down.

What it means is, and the populations talked about here are just plucked for reference, but a server will have an online population cap of say 5000, but initially they will allow more than this by layering another server (think global shard). So as people log on, when it reaches 5000, it will split in two allowing a total online population of 10,000 temporarily, split between two of 5000 and then splitting again if they approach the individual online population limit. By doing this they'll avoid 1000s of people queues in the first few weeks. The layers will then merge back together as the number of people online drops (eg overnight as far as I'm aware).

Have they said if there will be a way to switch between the layers? Like if your friend is in one layer and you are in the other, to be able to switch to the layer they are in? (I'm assuming that if you are in one layer and they are in another that you wont be able to "see" them etc)...something like a /layer command or something?

Yup, sounds like if you group with a friend you both will be put in the same layer, but yes, it's effectively a global shard that was spoken about a few months ago. My understanding is the extra layers will only exist while the realm is busy at peak times.

Video timestamped at the correct location where they discuss sharding/layering.

Edit: another explanation here:

Correct. It also helps with hundreds (if not thousands) of people in the Elwynn Forest starting zone for example trying to kill the same mob. It'd be chaos!
