Ok so it started last Thursday where after my stream I turned my PC off. Everything 100% normal. About 20mins later I needed to use my PC again so I turned it on and for some reason it was telling me it was doing a BIOS update, but this screen was literally just on for a moment - I didnt really get to see it. I did not initiate this. Then my PC took about 5-6 attempts to boot at all. It did eventually get into Windows though.

Saturday was the next time I used my PC and the same issues again when trying to boot into Windows. It took about 10 times this time, but it got in there and I was able to use it. Sunday I thought I would take a proper look into the issue as it was persisting and the issue has just got worse. For about 2 hours I could not get into Windows, not even into the BIOS. It was just crashing on the initial splash screen.

To try and resolve this I unplugged everything on the PC that was not required to simply run. I did get into Windows once but it was acting odd. After a bit of research I thought it might be the CMOS battery, so I replaced this and then I did a BIOS update to latest. This prompted Windows to say I needed to redo my PIN, but I was unable to do this due to my network not working (not sure why?). Very odd. I booted into repair and just reinstalled Windows (network now working), which I didnt mind doing as it is usually a quick thing and I keep no data on my C: anyway. After installing I got into Windows, ran all available updates and everything seemed stable. So I left it for the night with the plan to return on Monday PM after work to just reset it all up.

Annnnd the issues started again. It would not boot into Windows, and when it did it would be stable for about 5-10mins and just switch off with a Kernel Power 41 error. After some more research this can be caused by a few things inlcuding bad drivers, usually GFX drivers I read. So I mananged to update the GFX driver (I use studio drivers, not game ready ones), but this still did not solve the issue. I tried another older driver and this also did not resolve anything.

And this is where it gets worse.

I took my GPU out just to inspect the motherboard and all components, make sure everything is plugged in etc, and then replaced it back in. I turned the PC back on and I got into Windows, so whilst I was waiting for it to crash again (as it will crash just sitting on the desktop) I went to put the final screws into the PCI brackets to secure the card. I then dropped a screw into the PC stupidly and so I angled the case a bit to get it at it and the power went off again, which did not alarm me as I had expected this. However this time I heard a ticking like sound from the PSU, almost like a capacitor acting up. I switched the PC off at the PSU, gave it a few minutes before trying to boot again, but since then I have never got a display and never booted again.

It powers on, all fans spin, but the motherboard error lights either stick on the memory error light, or the GPU error light.

I have no idea where to go from here.

My head thinks that maybe the BIOS got mucked up and even with trying to flash it again, its not working right and the issues I am chasing all are related to that, but the PSU noise has me concerned that the PSU was at fault all along and now its taken out my GPU.

Honestly, I am at my wits end. I have ordered a new PSU to test (should be here tomorrow) but what are your thoughts? I have never had an issue like this that seems to shift around so much.

It is worth mentioning I have tried 2 monitors, and HDMI and DP on both without success. They do look like they are about to get a signal sometimes, but then don't and go back to saying no source found.

As a TL;DR -
PC will no longer give a display, all fans turn on (GPU included) but nothing happens. It started with a BIOS update (that I did not initiate) and since then I have had odd PSU noises - and now I think I have borked my GPU, or motherboard - or both?

PC specs;
3900X
ASUS Strix 570X-F Gaming
32GB DDR4 3600 (4 x 8GB)
RTX4080 (about 3 months old)
BeQuiet 1000W PSU (about 3 months old)

I would say PSU too, often over looked as people think it just supplies power to everything, which in effect it does, however, if its unstable power then its going to mess things up and make things unstable, see how you get on with the new PSU and let us know.

A motherboard is zero voltage, it just passes power from the PSU to devices like your CPU, RAM, Drives, Graphics card etc, it doesnt actually use any voltage itself.

I had a cool master PSU a long time ago, at the time I had OCZ SSD's, 1 in particular died, thinking it was a drive issue, I RMA'd the drive, OCZ sent me a new upgraded one (larger capacity) from 60gb to 90gb, it lasted about 6 months and then died again, so once again I RMA'd it, on the 3rd one which eventually died too, I changed the PSU, never lost a drive again, obviously a faulty rail in the PSU.

Also...Do you have any motherboard software in windows which might be trying to auto update the bios and drivers when your machine isnt doing much, if so get rid, very dangerous software, ive seen loads of dead boards from auto bios updates where people have not realized thats what the software was up to.

EDIT: As long as your old PSU is a decent one, then everything in you PC should be ok as OCP, OVP etc should protect everything, if it was some cheap piece of rubbish off ebay then I wouldnt be so hopeful, ive literally had a Leadtek superflower 1000w platinum blow up when ive switched the PC on in a brilliant white flash and almighty bang, and everything else survive, OCuk quickly replaced it for me and everything was fine after that.

It does sound like a capacitor issue. The problem is, it could be anywhere. I think you have started in the right place, but if a new PSU doesn't work then I am afraid I think it's probably the motherboard.

I have a legend of a mate who is going to lend me his PC tomorrow to test his GFX in mine, and my GFX in his to rule this issue out.

Packing up the new psu away now and hopefully I can return.

Being pretty new and the type of issue points to the GPU.
I hope its not. As the issues all started from the motherboard bios, as far as I can tell, I thought it was power or motherboard. Not saying that I may have caused further issues with the gpu mind.

Forced bios updates! Damn. What happens if you inadvertently did a hard shutdown whilst this was happening?

might have read this wrong but did you move your pc without securing your gpu? I hope you got away with that.

After your tests and if you're back to your initial issues, try booting in safe mode. Check stability and windows event viewer. Also take a look at your bios. I've had some settings move/change in the past that are just inexplainable.

No you're not reading that wrong. I did tilt my pc slightly with only one screw in which may have moves the GPU a bit. Doubt it caused an issue though as the pc acted like it had been doing so already.

Unfortunately safe mode is not an option as I get no display at all.

I find it hard to believe that the BIOS would have been updating automatically. According to the motherboard manual it can either be done from the OS with the "EZ Update" utility or from within the BIOS GUI.
BIOS can be corrupted. It has happened to me. This can cause the problems that the OP detailed.

Obviously if it's now so bad that the VGA won't work then there are few options. However the manual does describe "CrashFree BIOS 3" for BIOS recovery. If the recovery BIOS can be put on a USB memory stick then it might initiate recovery and maybe the recovered BIOS might allow the VGA to work.

This.

Don't Asus have some BS where they can force bios updates automatically, an sure I've heard of this issue before.

I would seriously consider if the mboard is the issue buy another brand

Ive got a ASUS board now and ive had plenty in the past, ive never experienced or heard of this before unless you install the crappy motherboard bundled software that comes with every board whether it be Gigabyte, ASUS, MSI etc, and you have auto updates enabled.

Huge thread about it on the asus forum.

Plenty of googling to be done if your interested

You should be able to disable the bios being pushed on you
By windows update
Either look for UEFI Capsule firmware updates in bios
Security section and disable it
If your bios contains the option

Or use devmgt.msc in windows
Find the system firmware option in devices
Disable it

Believe its a couple of years now
That bios/firmware updates have been on windows update
though not for everyone
i know asus uses CAP files
but cant remember if gigabyte also does
or any other manufacturer

i guess the reasoning behind it
is if a security vulnerability is discovered
you can push it to everyone
similar to how routers can auto update their firmware
all well and good if the bios flash works properly
but also means on pc you lose any custom
overclocking/unclocking etc bios settings

Obviously that won't fix the OP issue
They could try blind flashing from usb
Shouldn't matter if there's no display or not
Though theres the added issue of a dropped screw
Which may have caused other problems
