Go to/call a local coal merchant (the kind that supplies people with coal burners) and ask for 'restaurant quality charcoal'; burns hotter, longer, you need less and is far less smokey (and will likely cost less than anything from the supermarket).
I have trouble with cheap charcoal too. it never seems to get hot enough and burns itself out very quickly. Plus half the bag is just broken up and dust.
~2Kg of cheap Tesco charcoal briquettes from earlier today:
Did a great job on lots of chicken, sausages and burgers. Could have cooked it all over again too judging by the heat that was still getting chucked off it after I'd finished cooking.
I used the chimney and three of those little BBQ lighter cubes by the way. It was ready to cook in ~20 mins.
Agreed get yourself a Weber Chimney Starter i wouldnt bother barbecuing without one anymore.
Just a couple of lighter cubes that wont taint your food like that gel or spray on lighter fuel crap. Place the full chimney starter over it, have a beer for 20mins come back and you have nice glowing grey coals.
You didnt use enough lighter fluid. Pile them up in a pyramid they douse heavily and slowly with lighter fluid, then light it. Allow to burn for about 20 minutes until all the coals are white, then spread them out evenly.
