Worst Day of My Life

No being funny but this is a classic example of why I don't trust these auto lock systems.

A friend of mine has a car that he just walks out to gets in a pushes a button and drives away, he never has to take his key out of his pocket.

Electronic systems screw up that's a fact of life so give me a physical key over this auto junk any day.

+1. Always check my doors even though I have auto locking...

Insurance fraud? No, doesn't seem like a good idea
If you are insured for loss I don't see how this wouldn't be covered, loss is obviously it being stolen (otherwise it would be handed in) with you being at fault. How could they cover if he left it on top of the car and lost it, but not if he left it inside the car but the car unlocked.

Leaving your car unlocked can be interpreted by the insurance company that you did not fully utilize the security features of your car to prevent it being stolen and they can use that to refuse the claim

Also you generally can't be "double insured" - like if you lose a mobile phone you can't claim on the phone insurance AND your home insurance - it's one or the other and usually the policy that has cover that most closely matches the scenario.

So, if he left the bag in the car then the responsibilty of the item transfers to the "personal items" part of the car insurance but that would likely be invalidated due to the car being unlocked.

In the same way the contents aren't covered if the house wasn't locked.

That's why I don't even leave my sunglasses or loose change on view in my car.

Unfortunate to say the least. Chances are the laptops been sold on and your bag's been used to drop anchor in poo bay.
