Another current thread on here got me wondering about this.

Personally I've no great horror stories to tell but I'm guessing some of you could entertain us with some horror stories.

Any real life Basil Fawlty stories you'd care to entertain us with??

Any tales of jaw dropping, disgusting hotels, B&B, hostels?

Cathedral Quarter in Derby. Always a shame when such a prestigious, clearly heavily invested at some point (B&O TVs in each room) but properly run to the ground. A friend had his wallet fleeced by a cleaner. Shocking. I've stayed in grotty holes but tbh that's exactly what they said on the tin. CQ was a facade.

There was a hostel that we stayed in Belgium on a school trip going around the ww2 sites. We all had spag bol only to find out it was made from horse. Didn't go down very well. Lol
Haha reminds me I was in an Italian restaurant with some colleagues. Everything on the menu was prefixed with carvelo. It only twigged when I look around and the whole place was horse theme, jockeys, horse shoes etc. Bizarre haha. Great for iron though. Saved the Sicilians from major iron deficiency problems.

I once stayed at a place called The Drop Inn, Manchester, for a works Christmas night out.

It was just somewhere to kip so we didn't turn up until after the main event of the night and many many drinks. It was a pub, a fairly rough pub that was very rowdy. Not unusual for me, but some of my colleagues were like a fish out of water trying not to make eye contact with anyone. I went to the loo before heading to the room and it was covered in blood. Some of the rooms were in an annexe out back which is where we were. It was like an exaggerated scene from a movie with the sound of people having loud sex & domestic arguments with dodgy looking people just loitering in the hallways. I'm sure it was being used as a brothel.

Half of the group just got an expensive taxi home before they even went in their room they were that horrified

I use to frequent the sawdust and spit pubs back in my youth. Back then I would have thought your post was a bloody good advertisement for the place. :)

The Birmingham Hotel.

This was several years ago, but they checked and took a copy of my passport on the way in (why?).

The whole place was run down, the room was filthy, holes in the carpet, cigarette burns, bathroom filthy. The TV remote was chained down to the table, not that there were any batteries in it.

Fortunately this was just a place to crash after a night out, think I slept in my clothes on top. The surrounding area was dodgy as well.

To be fair, my car was still there and not vandalized the next morning, I guess I got lucky.

BnB in Eastbourne, went to see Darren Brown, was close to the venue and 20 quid a night (lol)

I knew it was gonna be nasty but, we slept in our clothes because everythign was so filthy...

you get what you pay for :P

I won't name the hotel or it's location, but I wanted to visit a town I used to live in when I was younger, so I booked a hotel without bothering to check the reviews, etc. When I saw the room, I immediately had visions of old men using these room with hookers - and no, I wasn't one of those old men.

Pretty sure that's overspill for steel house lane

I also stayed in London once for my first 'proper' job interview. Ended up in a pit near Paddington that was clearly a European hostel type. Asked if I could securely store my suitcase and he said ya dump it downstairs with the other 100 bags

The headboard spanned the entire room with all sorts of graffiti and nazi symbols on it.

I remember it well as I was going to a pre joiners event and I got to the tube station and 2 super hot chickas were stranded with massive suit cases and the escalator was broken. I donned the Cape and my wizard hat and took the bags down; ended up at my event literally wet through with sweat.

Wash it down with some red rum, neigh bother.

Any hotels that have plastic quick wipeable surfaces are never a good sign. Having had my room double booked at many a Holiday Inn I always snib the door or block it with a chair.

A friend once told me a story of a really posh hotel he stayed at. The couple next door were having really noisy sex and a lot of it. He couldn't sleep so called reception and they called the room, their activities stopped but only briefly; they were back at it soon after. Another call probably from another guest and this time reception paid them a visit to their room. There was a lot of commotion, lots of voices, some quite irate, curiosity got the best of my mate he opened his door to the hall to see a camera man, sound engineer and director leave with their kit, as well as the two main "stars"! He said he was gutted, if he had known and had they let him critique their performance he wouldn't have called reception, and knowing him, I don't doubt it!

I once got locked out of my house after going to the pub. Was middle of winter, snowing and I had on a T-Shirt and jeans.

First decided to try and sleep in the garden, before realising that was going to kill me. So called a cab and asked them to take me to the nearest, cheapest hotel. I was only 20 and had lived in the area about 3 months, so didn't really know anywhere.

I ended up at the "Hotel" Formula 1, Stockton-on-Tees........ OMG.... It was £20. Full of kids who had pulled on a night out / old blokes with ladies of the night. Someone came around at 9am with a German Shepherd to get everyone out. One shared toilet for the entire place (which was a weird injection molded room which self-cleaned).

It was horrendous and thankfully no longer there. But it did stop me from dying of hypothermia, so there is that.........
