worth changing Opteron 146 to 3800?

Would say 1.55v max on air, 1.6v max on water.

Should be OK as long as you stick to that and keep an eye on temps. Some of the A64 chips get really hot when overclocked even with little or no additional voltage.

I was in the same boat around 3 weeks ago.
My Opty 144 was running very happy at 2.6Ghz and if I was to buy a X2 3800 it would be a lottery to obtain the 2.6 GHz and be of any use.

Luckily though I found an Opteron 185, which is 2.6 GHz stock (same as FX 60) and I have noticed the difference.
Windows is much more responsive, I don't get lag or grinding to a halt in games when another app (mostly anti virus software) decided to run in the background.

It must also help in games as they are a little smoother and my Futuremark 3d-06 score jumped over 1200 points.

Still, I think I will be reverting back to the Opty 144 and sell the entire rig get the Q6600 Go-Slacker !! :)

How much would you want for your Opty if you decided to sell?

Around £110...its full retail & cost me £155 3 weeks ago  I had a mad moment ;) but its the fastest stock socket 939 CPU you can buy !
Not too bad considering you can't get them on the Bay for less than £120 and an FX 60 (in essence the same chip) will set you back over £200

What speeds did you get from it?

I didn't clock it...just have it at stock, 2.6 GHz the same as my single core Opty 144.
I haven't had the time I have become a father for the second time in recent weeks......I come to work for a rest :p

If I recall it is a good stepping so should have a bit of room for an OC probably 2.8 GHz quite easily.

Thanks for the info. I don't have enough posts to access the traders forum so it is a moot point anyway. :(

right, it came this morning @ 07:30... damned royal mail ALWAYS deliver my parcels at that time meaning i HAVE to get up or miss it....

but anyways, now i was awake.... run some quick tests etc to compare...

all scores are at 2.8ghz with stock figures in brackets if i did it...

WOC = world of conflict demo - that game i'm into at the moment...

opty 146 - 280x10 @ 1.49v
ram @ 200mhz

super pi 31.015s (stock 45.609)

cpu 1098
total 4095

Aq3 gfx 13242
Aq3 cpu 12328
total 86155

WOC - 18fps (stock 10)

i got the opty out and went to put in the 3800+ stepping LCB9E 0719RPMW but then realised i had no idea where my arctic silver was. :o slight oversight... but i manage to find some ceramic paste from an old arctic cooler (9600XT - thats how old!) but it wasnt solid so i figured it should be ok. sods law, i found some AS5 as i'm doing this when i went to get something out of a drawer. :o

anyways enough story....

installed CPU at 08:30 and did those tests... then oced it to 2.6 (after running a couple of tests stock) on stock volts straight off...

3800+ @2.6

VERY impressed with the WOC increase! :D 33% increase in average frame rate from a CPU?? yeah that's cool...

so then me being me...

3800+ @2.8
ram @ 200mhz

super pi 32.547s (stock 47.375)

WOC - 26fps (stock 18)

44% increase in WOC frame rate over my opty at the same speed.... :)

a bit better and its super pi 32mb stable and i had to up the voltage to 1.4v (think they're 1.35 stock?).

currently just trying to find a temp program that will allow me to see both cores and also trying to get it primed on both cores...

Ive just got a brand new retail opty 185, socket 939 for £150,, off a well known computer site, first letter is "S". It makes mince meat of my fx55 cpu.. Im well impressed.:D:D Thanks GeForce for all your help.
