Worth dropping uni for a job?

The job is a Crime Scene Investigator role for the Avon and Somerset Police, the role doesn't require any qualifications judging from the description, they train you themselves.

I've done Chemistry and Biology at college, and BTEC in Forensic Science.

I'm in my 2nd year at uni studying a BSc in Forensic and Crime Scene Science.

Hell no, youll be able to get a better role than this with the quals you got, dont risk it, especially as you have started the debt, keep going, be patient, youll regret it dude, a degree is something extra to have.

I know you can, hence he may need one

For some places, entry to certain levels requires a degree.

That was supposed to say without.

Also what career path has senior level positions where a piece of paper (a degree) is needed?

Most degrees have no relation to the real world of work, especially computer degrees in my experience.

no for me. Stick to uni and then apply after you finish. In this world, qualification is reality. The last thing a person would ever want to do is not to have a degree in their shelf.

I dropped out of university to take a job and though I didn't regret it for five or six years, I do now.

Once you progress from frontline operational roles to management, the lack of a degree will close lots of doors, rightly or wrongly.

I have a great job and no problems doing the work but the number of times I've been rejected for roles because I don't have a degree would shock you.

Stick it out for another year or whatever, it will pay dividends in ten years time.

Everyone 'needing' degrees makes me :( Waste of time and money on a lot of counts, it's 3 years of useful 'working' that isn't done by the populace because they're learning Advanced Yacht Trigonometry with Equine Science BSc.

If I were you I'd apply for the job, probably not even get accepted, then just carry on with the degree. You'll probably find that due to the CSI factor* every man and his chimp will apply for the same position but with degrees. They'll then use degrees as an easy filter to get rid of some of the CVs.

*Everyone wants to get into Forensics because it looks cool

Ring the Avon and summerset police department (my dad says they were a good establishment to work for so theyl be usefull ), explain your position to them, ask them for there advice. Maybe even talk to other people in the profession to see what they feel is needed.

People in this thread are generalising too much, dropping out may be a good or bad idea, depending on the specific circumstances. Does seem odd investing that much cash into yourself and giving in to the easy option though.

yeah, he might find out that being a CSI is absolute crap, anyway, a degree opens LOADS of doors... it's best to keep your options open, especially when you're young (that's a fact)

thats the whole point, it's not the first job but the one in 10 years time where having a degree or not will matter. It's not a field I know a lot about so I can't comment really but I imagine in 10 years if you wanted to be running a lab or whatever then you'd be better off with a degree.

It depends how you feel about it, its your choice at the end of the day. I no people who have got through uni and passed and people who have been to uni and dropped out. Also people who ain't gone to uni. I know which one out of the 3 I would like to be. I'll let you decide which one I mean.

All I know is, is that without a degree i'd probably be stuck working at Nationwide in Swindon my whole life (with all the people that didn't go to uni)...that's the worst fate i can imagine for myself. Thankfully I got a degree and am working in London

Definately don't do it. Because yes you might get the job and it might be fun for 5 years but soon enough you will start asking for more money and will get back responses along the lines of "but but but you don't have a degree..." A degree raises your potential earnings ceiling but not much more.

And they are?
Let's see, medicine, City work, scientific work....

The OP is slightly mad...there's lots of job adverts for my field at the moment, but, er, I'm not going for them because I'm still in uni! I think the real reason is that the OP isn't enjoying uni that much, perhaps....

If you get the job id go for it, everyone has degrees these days, work experience is more valuable imo.

agreed, i have a degree, but for my line of work no one gives a crap. its all down to experience and other qualifications like ccnp, mcse etc.

uni i believe is a big mistake these days for IT related work.

I'm loving Uni, was a great move and I've met a load of decent people and it's helped me mature and become more responsible / independant.

The course is enjoyable and I'm keeping on top of work, it's just if I was offered the place in a job I'd be going for after my degree then I might aswell save the extra year of debt.

They train me up on a couple of courses, so I guess they'd be taken with me if I ever left. I think the only reason I'd drop from Uni is if I had the option to study alongside my career in the future, or possibly to finish off my degree whilst in this job.

I'm swaying a lot more towards staying at Uni for the main reason:

What if I don't enjoy it?
What if I move off to NZ and need to leave my job?
What if I get stuck at the same position and wage for the rest of my career?

All of these wouldn't be a problem if I had my degree. Who knows? Maybe I'll get an interview and ask me to come back after my degree anyway.
