As the title says is it worth getting an SSD to install the OS on?
I'm looking at the Kingston HyperX 3K SSD 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive.
I know there much much faster than a standard drive but at only 120gb i wont really be able to put many games on there so is it a waste of money or a good investment putting the OS on there and games ect on my normal HD?
Will it make much of a difference having the OS on there but still having to put my games on my normal HD?

Thanks

Best investment on any PC with a SATA port you could ever buy. :)

I just upgraded from 120GB to 250GB, although I never used more than 75% of my 120GB drive really. Just put 2 or 3 games I used the most on there.

I have an SSD in my PC, HTPC, Laptop and Netbook now ;)

My motherboard is pretty new so it has 2 SATA 6gb connecters so i guess that would make full use of a good SSD then?

Since games these days are 20-30gb you couldn't really put many on but like you said you could put the ones you use the most on there.

Depending on the drive, most SSD's max out a SATA 2 connection now, this doesn't cause any issues though.

The difference in games isn't that noticeable to be honest. It's more about doing a full reboot in 30 seconds and everything happening instantly :D

What do you think of Kingston HyperX 3K SSD 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive then?
I was just browsing through and from the reviews and speeds seems like a good one to go for.

No issues with that drive at all :) A Samsung 250GB can be picked up for ~£130 if you feel you need some extra space.

Decided to go with the Samsung 128GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic. As i said its mostly for the OS and the newest 1/2 games im playing. The rest can go on my normal HD so that should be pretty good for that purpose.

It will plug in like a normal drive with a SATA cable. You can get mSATA drives but there's no point on a desktop really.

Does it matter which cable i use aswell? im looking at the spare ones i have with the motherboard and apart from being different colours, i cant see any difference.

EDIT: Never mind the black cables say 6GB on so i presume you use them :D

Any advice reguarding installation and bios settings?
Ill be using the SSD as my OS and main drive and my HD that i have now as my storage drive.
I haven't much experiance with RAID's ect and configuring an SSD properly.
Do i need to put them in a raid? or just leave them at default?

You'll need at least 2 drives two RAID them.
Just install the o/s like it was a normal mechanical disk, Windows 7 pretty much configures itself for the SSD.

Make sure SATA mode is set to ACHI in BIOS before installing.

When installing W7, unplug all other drives bar the SSD. Once installed you can plug them back in. You don't have to do this but it does help ensure W7 knows it's on an SSD plus all the files are on that drive and not spread onto others at all.

Once installed, disable Hibernation ("powercfg-h /off" in CMD). Make sure the defrag is disabled on the drive too. And that's mostly it really.

Well got my samsung 840 pro SSD. Reinstalled the OS onto it.. What a huge difference it makes. Everything in the OS is so much quicker and boots so fast now. I can definatly see why its a good investment.
Using my old HD as my storage drive now.
