As title really, is it worth me ditching my AMD 64 4000+ San Diego (Single Core) and getting an X2 4200+ instead?

I mainly play games like COD4, CZ and CS:S

Cheers,

G

No, I would suggest you do something bigger or not at all.

The biggest my mobo supports is an amd x2 4800+ and I don't know where I can get hold of one of them (939)

Getting a decently priced second hand Opteron 100 series shouldn't be too hard, I would try that (170s and 180s are dual core) :)

I'm inclined to agree with you there. when I was on s939 I upgraded from a +4000 sd to a +3800 x2. Dual core felt faster in some things but at the same time my max overclock went from 3ghz to 2.6ghz. The only reason i did it was becasue the x2 cost me £38 and a someone offered me £30 for the 4000. It's a nice upgrade but not really worth going to any trouble or expense for.

I could tell a decent difference going from a 4000+ @ 3Ghz to a X2 3800+ @2.7Ghz, enough to warrant spending £10 (£35 for the X2, sold the 4000+ for £25)

its a nice jump in most respect sas i done the same from 3800 single to 4400 dual, most applications i run like photoshop and games etc run sweeter, but im seriously thinking a total upgrade of everything as now on vista and only 2gb ram and prices for ddr ram is silly now way over priced.

certainly, indeed, indisputably, undoubtedly, unquestionably, yes :)

I upgraded from Opteron an 144, same overclock speed (which leads me to believe I've reached limit for my mobo). Get a cheap X2 3800+ and overclock it. It will mean you won't have to upgrade mobo + ram for a while.

i have a 3800 single core, would upgrading to the 5000+ x2 black edition a reasonable upgrade?

Yes definitely, the difference being you have socket AM2. You could get a dual core CPU for a good price. Core2 is better but if i had an AM2 board i wouldn't have any problem buying a new CPU for it. Not sure which is the best price/performance AM2 CPU as i havent read about them for a while. Just make sure you update your BIOS before you fit the CPU If it needs it

I went from a 4000+ to a 4400+ on one of my pc's and there was a big difference. Not in fps improving but the overall responsiveness was a hell of a lot better.

Totally NOT worth it!

I had a Sandiego 4000+ and it would do 3.2Ghz, ran all games "pretty well"...

Can't see a 4200+ dual core clocking anywhere near that, not sure though...?

Its kinda like changing your dirty pants for some more grubby pants...

I went from a 3700+ SD (at 3.0ghz) to a 3800+ X2 Toledo (now at 2.7ghz) and it is a million times better for all uses. Games, encoding the lot.

Cost me £25 and half an hours work, but they clock well and are still fast for the price you pay. A worthwhile purchase for anyone looking to see how much better multi-core is over single.
