Worth playing online poker for little money?

Ive just signed up to full tilt poker. They offer you a match bonus of up to $600 but there is a catch, as i was to find out.

when you play "ring games" (just sitting at a table with x amount and free to leave whenever) and tournament games you earn points, this depends on your betting and tournament entry fees. 1 point i think its 0.05c or thereabouts.

So i added $50 in and should get $50 back when i earn enough "points". So far im on about 70 odd which equates to about $3. You can only claim back in $5 amounts i think so i have a few more points to get yet before i get any of my bonus amount back.

General rule for bank roll management is this.

in "sit n go" (usually a single table of 9 or 6) tournaments you should only ever buy in at 5% of your bankroll.

bankroll of $50, you could buy into a tournament of $2.5 or thereabout, meaning i could play 20 games at $2.5 buy in before my bankrolls gone bust, but hopefully obviously you would win some games and keep the bank roll going.

in "mtt" tournaments ( multi table tournaments with 9+ playes up to a lot say 1000 or more ) you should only buy in at 2% of your bankroll.

So $50 again would be $1 tourneys, you get the picture.

for "ring games" you should look at buyin in at 5% of your bankroll

E.g.

you have $50 dollars in your bank. we work it out like this for 5%.

take roughly 100 big blinds(a reasonable amount of hands you could play whilst getting some good hands drawn), divide your $50 dollars by 100 and this gives your 0.05c, so you would want to buy into a game that has small/big blinds of 0.02/0.05c. This way if you have lots of poor hands drawn you can still keep playing until something nice comes along. So we would enter this 0.02/0.05c game with $5 dollars.

There is also another thing to note with ring games, you should cash out of the game your playing if your chips are greater than 10% of your entire bankroll.

So we enter with $5 dollars and work our way up to $10, now we should leave the table and find another table to play on, this bank roll management strategy can be found by checking out the full tilt poker academy which has loads of REALLY helpful videos/tutorials/tests to help you get the best out of your poker playing experience!

That's the main reason why i signed up for full tilt as you get lots of added extras that help you learn as you play without loosing all your money hopefully,

Hope this helps :D

Thanks for the info guys. Very informative.

So if i say i wanted to test the water with £5 and hope to double it to £10 and leave it as that so i have earned a fiver towards the bills lol. I could do this?

Takin the advice given in this topic of course. Bank rolling etc.

Trying out full tilt poker free play. Tis a bit diff from facebook. Most ppl win with good hands with straights or flushes as opposed to high pair or 3 of a kind. Also seems faster gameplay which can be nice but i like slow as i dont like to be rushed. Won with a straight to 7 tho and baged a bit, fake money but still nice feeling hehe.

Was a long shot tho with only having a 5 and 6 as its pretty weak hand compared to what id try to use which would be 8 or above with a j or above for a decent strong hand chance.

Lost first 200 or almost. By trying to win by 3 of a kind, a pair, waiting to see if my cards worth anything after last card has drawn. Which i wont be doing much of in future if i keep at this.

Hated it tho when had 3 10s and guy one with a flush or a straight forget which but drove me mad lol.

Free play can be fun to pass some time but as someone has already said it will give you a false impression of your playing and the game as a whole.

If you can afford it put some money on and have a go at cash, i'd recommend for your first game sticking to the top ten starting hands and not really playing anything else as it will allow you to see how the game works in a cash situation without commiting too early and getting knocked straight out.

Yeah, but it's just simply proportionate. If you play a tournament you're playing with a stack of chips. It's all relative to the table you are on.
FWIW I have trouble moving up tables - what was a small raise on a lower table is to me a percentage big rise on a higher table.

Free to play gambling is so utterly pointless except for fun, and even then for me it's just NOT fun.

We (as a family) gamble at Christmas. Depending on the kind of company you play with you have to be very careful.

I can quite easily bluff a round and get people to fold decent hands with brute force money. At the end of the day do not play in an environment where you have to question too much whether you should be going in on a near top hand.

Make sure you know your limits and where for you that commitment point is and whether you commit to your hand. Can be a very expensive lesson to learn!

I think thats why he is playing fun games, so he doesnt have to have any expensive lessons whilst he gets the hang of it.

If you want to play with money then do it, on cheap tables. Playing free games will teach you very little about gambling even if it does teach you the theory.

The great thing about online poker compared to live is you can play for miniscule stakes, which is great for learning. I would advise playing 1c/2c tables just to get to grips with the game. After you have a basic understanding I would invest in a book or two, or maybe some online training videos, which will really help youre game flourish.

Also, I can guarantee you that you WILL lose your first few deposits, so don't expect to become phil ivey overnight because nobody does! I speak from experience as it cost me at least 100$ before I started winning, even with fairly sensible bankroll management, but if you have the right temperament and mindset for the game it will be a good investment so don't look upon it as money wasted!

It's also helpful to sign up to a site offering a nice first deposit bonus, as it'll give you something to shoot for before you can actually turn a profit at the game itself. Basically all games will be ridiculoulsy soft at the micro stakes so it doesn't matter too much where you play. Pokerstars and Fulltilt are the most popular poker rooms by far (mainly because they still allow US players) and they have pretty decent software, although I hear the rake at Full Tilt is very high at the low limits, so it may be best avoided.

My own personal choice would be to start at PKR. The 3D graphics are the best in the business which attracts a lot of weak players, and helps to keep the game pace slow which'll give you more time to make decisions while you're new. I don't play there myself anymore because as you get better you will take functionality over pretty visuals, but as a place to start you can't beat it.

I've spend the last year playing online cash games for a living, having built my initial $100 to over $70k, so if you've got any more questions I'll be only too happy to help!

watching pros play will help as well:D phil ivey awesome dude but only he can make bold ass bluffs if you play more like howard lederer conservative and patient it'll pay off :D

Just to let you know if you used your debit card to deposit on Full Tilt, then they won't let you take out your money back to your debit card unless you are withdrawing over $100. If you used a different method (neteller etc) then the minimum is $50.
Another thing to think about when signing up to a poker site is whether you can get "rake" back. (the amount you pay to the site each time you enter a tournament or play/win a hand) Usually if you sign up to a site through an affiliate site then this is possible. in some cases you can get up to 30% back. Not sure if I'm allowed to post the link here so just search for "poker rakeback" in google.

Can someone please tell me how the f i lost this hand when i clearly beat his hand with a straight to k compared to his pair of 4s.

Theres no queen, so no straight.

Also looking at the two screen shots you have posted you really should have folded both after the flop (unless you fancied a go at bluffing).

The first one was the perfect example of someone getting lucky, more often than not you will loose money in thoise situations.

Playing in a 10 man table with J 8 and out of position is pretty mad as well.

I think i read this or heard it somewhere "Only play with Ace - 10 or better and only ever go all in. More often than not you will win!" Don't have the stones to test it though.
