Mate's picking up an X plate A3 1.8T on Friday, just wondering if there's any sensible mods that are worth doing, or anything essential that may need checking/doing? Cheers. :)

I thought these engines ran on a belt Firestar ?
I used to own an S3 and I changed the belt on that when i had the waterpump and tensioners etc done.

Get it remapped, very good bhp/£

It's done 135k with FSH, but no idea what's been done maintenance wise, will find out on Friday when we pick it up.

Can always go down the belted route for uber power :D wont be cheap mind.
It's a peach of an engine and can obtain big power if done right.

a friend has one and has tuned his to 400 Lb-Ft Torque and 407 Bhp. He blew the turbo recently so has now got a bigger turbo and was getting it remapped today.

Best bang per buck has to be a remap on these engines. If it was mine I'd start by giving it fresh oil and checking the oil pickup as mentioned. I would think most 1.8t are on the latest revised coilpacks by now but no harm in checking although when they go it's not exactly subtle so fairly easy to spot!

Depends how many miles it's done.

- Oil Pickup
- Cam Chain Tensioner
- Coil Packs
- Boost leaks

what he said. there will be knackered breather hoses too. certain things are so common that i keep a stock of the one way valves and use my own special silicon hose instead of the rubber breather pipe vw used because they perish so badly

vacuum hoses.

X plate ones are pretty much on the change over to the "larger" ko3s, so depending on engine code, he could have the "larger" turbo.

the reason ive got that in inverted commas is because the ko3s really isnt that much more potent.

150bhp AUM and AUQ engines had the ko3s

unless you do a fair bit of fiddling itll still feel like a bit of a lame duck

nah, quite a few models had the ko3s.

if you get the breathing right you can make the car have decent pull until 6krpm. ive spent time tweaking the ignition too and that really improved the car.

mine personally (in a mk4 golf) has seen 6.2krpm in 5th. 5th is worth 23.9mph/1000rpm and it was still pulling, it was me that bottled out.

so they can be quick enough, they are quiet and comfortable, but youll be hard pushed to make a 20vt "fun". its not a gti or a vtec and it despirately wants a larger turbot

I see!

My mates Leon had a K03S it was the Cupra 180 as standard, APR remap to 215, Forge TIP, Milltek exhaust, Carbonio intake. That went really well, in fact it was suprisingly quick but yeah not really my idea of fun
