Worthwhile upgrade?

I'm currently running a C2D E7200 @ 3.2-3.3Ghz, and while I had my 8800GT card in I felt there wouldnt be very significant gains to be had by clocking it much further. (Stock speed is 2.53Ghz for that chip)

I can get hold of an E8400 for very little money, and am wondering if you think its worth bothering with upgrading to that, now that I've recently bought a GTX 460?

Will it give the 460 a bit more of a helping hand, with having more cache and a higher FSB?

Cheers

The gains will be modest in truth. There will be some but unless you are able to either sell or use your E7200 CPU elsewhere I am not sure if it is worth the money. BUT if the E8400 is as cheap as chips then get it. Nothing to loose at the end of the day mate.

I don't see the point of going from a E7xxx to a E8xxx, as it would be like upgrading from a GTS250 to a GTX260...if you know what I mean. The E7xxx CPU should be overclockable to 3.8-4.0GHz...you should just overclock your current CPU and stick a GTX460 in your PC, assuming you got a reasonable CPU cooler.

The diff between GTS 250 and GTX 260 is actually around 30-60% ;-).

I'd say depending the price you paying, if after selling your current CPU it will work out under 20quid then it's worth it, if anything more then don't bother.

Maybe you could tell us the price you're going to pay for it and if it's been OCed before etc? And what's the source?

Maybe a Q6600 or a move over to AM3 might be better idea depending on how much you're going to spend.

I probably shall then.

I'm more concerned with the hateful mechanism that my Arctic Cooling CPU cooler uses to attach to the motherboard to be honest!

I damaged 1 leg swapping the cooler direction recently, not sure how much more damage it'll take before it breaks.

Will have to see when I can get a good time to perform the swap :p

You just have to get the hang of how to attach and detach the AC Pro7. I remember installing the first time and installing the 2nd time ages later it takes me like half an hour to because the push spring getting locked up before 'hooking' on the 4 holes on the motherboard...but once I get the hang of it, it's really easy and just take about 1 minute to clip on properly :p

What would anyone trade the CPUs without any money on top??
Maybe its borked chip or just scam?

Make sure it's from trusted source ; ).
