Here's an amusing link:

Don't know about driver skill differences, but it's funny to watch a WRX storm away from a 1.6 MX5 in a straightline, only to have the MX crawl all over it in the corners. I would say "so much for 4wd", but then I'll probably get the second obligatory Impreza statement of "wait till it rains".

Kinda the same thing you get driving in a small car on a road you know well vs someone in a much faster car who doesn't know it well. Had great fun on a mountain run one day overtaking a TT one day in a Micra because of this. He was backing off in corners where I was stringing a few of them together at 60-65mph. Finally got a to stretch that looks like its a blind bend but suddenly opens onto a straight stretch, and I caught him in the wrong gear, and passed him like he wasn't moving. :D

That said a local in decrepit an early 1980's Saab 9000 with about 6 people in it only one headlight, riddled with rust managed to catch and pass me at night on the same road, even though I had about 1/4 mile head start on it. Watch in amazment as he caught and passed me, and I wasn't sparing the right foot either. Thats on Mountain roads at night.

Same thing in Karting on an unfamilar track. Someone who knows it well will be a lot faster till you learn the track, where to lift off and where you don't have to, the best racing line etc.

Reminds me of that feature on Top Gear with the mad German woman in the Transit on the Nurburgring overtaking all the fast bikes etc

This is what makes me laugh with all this talk about "you must get car X, its the best handling car in its class"..

I swear people 'believe' that the relatively small differences in car handling will make them driving gods, when the biggest factor by far is the driver's skill..

The MX5, however, is perhaps one of the best handling cars in the world.. though.

You'd have had a valid point if the racing driver guy was in a Vectra, keeping up :p

Even with two evenly matched cars, and equally skilled drivers, if one knows the road/track and the other doesn't that makes an even bigger difference. Thats said if someone was a god (like Schuey) I'm sure they could catch me in anything, despite what I was driving.

A WRX can go around corners well, if you know how to drive it. Should be faster round a corner than a MX5 IMO with the right technique. Also braking should be better too.

Interesting vid :)

Gave a rude boy in a VTS the shock of his life on Friday coming home from work......

I was stuck behind the VTS a van then truck coming onto a nice straight bit of country road doing about 50, droped it into 3rd and overtook the VTS (Which followed me straight away) then the van and truck, was doing about 80 - 90 by the time i had passed all, the Saxo was right up my bum all the time which was fair enough he probably didn't want his manhood insulted by an MX5, he was getting quite eager to try and pass but couldn't really make any headway on me, then the fun begins :) As i proceed to take these sweeping country road corners without backing off this Saxo started to drop further and further back he simply couldn't keep up, after i'd had my fun i slowed down in time for the 40mph limit and he overtook me in the 40 and gave me a flash of his hazzards.

Twas a fun trip home :)

First time I ever went on a track I kept up with a Scooby WRX STi in the same manner as that. Bumper to bumper in the corners but no chance on straights.

What was I in? A 1.6 or 1.8 Focus.

I had a rough understanding of racing lines etc... and the only reason I could keep up with the Scooby is that the driver had NO idea of racing lines or anything really. I am not a pedigree race driver, I have been told I am a natural but I don't really have any experience and also, prior to this incident with the scooby no track experience, so the scooby driver mustof been really bad.

So this proves that although the MX-5 is an excellent handling car, if that scooby had a better driver it would have blown the MX-5 away.

lol

that scooby is braking in all the wrong places and not taking the right lines at all..

the driver of the mx5 tho.. is hitting all the apexs perfectly etc.. lol

swap the drivers of the car. and watch the scooby go lol

id have either car tho :p

Sabine is who you mean. Mad woman cackles like a witch and drives like a demon posessed.

It's when she's behind you in the Karusell with he hands off the wheel gesturing you to go faster and get out the way...

Tbh, if i was in a ferrari 360 the MX5 would have still caught up with me, i cant drive for love nor money.

Its not what your driving, its how you drive it, as Sabine and others have demonstrated many times before.

tis interesting to watch, and if you listen to the bit at the end as they are pulling into the pits it reveials a lot about whats actually going on.

It sounds like its a pretty professional / very knowledgeable driver who is taking someones car out for a critic on the suspension setup. Also sounds like they have uprated, adjustable shocks which can make a huge difference to the mx-5's handeling, which as mentioned above is damn fine for its class.

I'd say to a degree :p

No matter how good you are, my grandad in the Veyron could outpace you and your 18/(Insert correct number of wheels here) wheeler - and he's dead!
