Would like to use OSX in a VMWare machine

its possible, but semi-legal

Apple has shown no response to anything bar linking directly to sources of illegal software i.e. torrents of developer kit.

It's very cool though. Daft as it sounds the illegal copies that people are installing could increase mac sales as people will try out the operating system and find that they can get on with it. Part of the reason for microsofts success was that dos was pirated so lots of people got used to using it. I'd certainly never have tried OS X without the dodgy version.

My gut feeling is that the vast majority of this tiny minority of people who are hacking up their PCs to install OS X are very hardcore PC users who enjoy the flexibility and ultimately value that the PC platform provides. I seriously doubt that Apple thinks that these people could convert into profitable sales on their hardware range.

ok then i wonder about this one, i no its silly but what if i wanted to run osx in vmware on a imac coreduo with bootcamp on it???? would that be acceptable??

There is no vmware on OS X so thats going to be your first problem :p There is Parallels virtual machine, no idea if it runs OS X though. I suspect not, its probably designed for BIOS based x86 bootloads like Windows, Linux etc.

I'm not sure what Apple's legal policy on running a second copy of OS X inside a virtual machine as well. Microsoft requires that you buy multiple licenses of Windows XP if you run a second copy inside a virtual machine!

Possibly legal and definitely possible. You would only be running one copy of the OS at a time on a single computer.

What you're talking about is illegal.. so I doubt this thread will last long.

If you want to use OSX, just buy a bloody Mac!

Agreed.

Bootcamp is using XP on a apple machine, this is legal as apple have allowed it, however using OS X on a non-apple machine is illegal. Yes I am a mac fanboy, its because they work, I also have a PC too...

It may be against their terms & conditions but it certainly isn't illegal if you own a license for os x for intel. I know this isn't available seperately and only comes supplied with a intel apple. However if this machine is destroyed then under European law you're free to reuse or sell the license.

Indeed, the retail release of OS X Leopard means that Apple will have to accept that people within the EU have a legal right and hack it to run on their vanilla PC machines.

The story in the U.S. however is totally different. The DMCA means that if Apple includes a copy protection scheme in Leopard (they will) so it only runs on Apple hardware, it probably will be illegal to crack that protection scheme.

Of course, its my belief that its only a matter of time before the EU introduces their DMCA-like legislation.
