It has been explained before by brains far larger then ours that the problem is getting there, getting back requires relatively little in the way of thrust. Getting off the surface would be easier then on earth due to the 1/3rd mavity and getting back to earth would merely be reducing your rotational speed around the sun in order to arrive back into earths orbit, hopefully around the time earth is there too.

Thread is quite pointless really. That said if there was no way of getting back then no I wouldn't go. I'd give up a lot to go there but not my life. I've got too much to live for back here.

No, what's the point of having such an excellent experience if you cannot live to enjoy it afterwards?

I value my current life a bit more than that!

Wouldn't it be interesting if they made a space ship, kitted it out with lots of supplies (years worth maybe), sent a couple of people out into space in it, and just let them drift as far into space as they could go.

How long would it take for the expedition to leave our planetary solar system, and travel into previously untravelled space? At what point would we lose communication with such a vessel? I assume it would need to be in the range of the sattelites etc

Do we also get to be the first man to walk on Mars? Or just to go there and not come back. Either way it's a yes, but if you were to be the first man ever then completely yes.
