Just picture the scene, You're Joe Biden's, Xi Jinping's, Vladimir Putin's top general and you've been given the order to luanch a nuclear attack, knowing full well that you'll be possibly ending civilisation and destroying the world. Would you push the button?
Me, I'd tell them, may you and the other politicians rot in the radioactive, chemical and biological hell you've created and with most of the world's population, who's going to vote for you now becuase of your egos?'. I'd push the button then shoot myself but I'd leave a note asking for what's left of human civilisation to forgive and not blame me but to lay the blame squarely at the feet of the politicians first.

that is why they hire nationalistic soldiers who do their duty and follow orders, civilians would be useless for that job including myself who would probably freak out in a state of shock

I don't think I'm a luanch kind of person.

What’s the point of a nuclear deterrent if you are not prepared to use it?

"Stanislav Petrov was in charge of a Soviet nuclear early warning center when there was a report of five American nuclear missiles heading towards the soviet union. Rather than retaliate, Stanislav followed his gut feeling and went against protocol, convincing the armed forces that it was a false alarm. His decision saved the world from a potential devastating nuclear holocaust."

What you describe is Hitler in his last days. Hitler was so incensed with the loss, sought utter destruction of his own country.

Nuclear weapons are a deterrent and have worked. If one country lets one loose, it would likely result in WW3; which would be very short (watch the film Threads).

We are all panicking over a non existent fuel shortage, loo roll and now its meat. If a real war broke out, well...

I bet he would have pressed it if the American missiles landed, so that’s a pointless argument.
