Would you tip game devs?

With an indie dev that does low budget stuff, but lets you buy some skins or a soundtrack for an extra few quid? Absolutely.

With a big company like Blizzard? Not a chance, the competent dev's can quit their jobs and form studios in the same way the E33 guys did after leaving Ubisoft. I'm not "tipping" bloated nonsense hires in huge companies that have no talent, they can go apply to McDonalds for all I care.

Id' be so embarrassed if people tried to tip me for something I get paid to do already, I'd insist they just gave it to charity.

Which incidentally is something I've told all my family to do next year for Christmas. I don't need anything and there are plenty who do.

Working in a game dev position I'd find it very weird to be tipped by someone in a financial sense (although when I was a Postie it was nice bonus). I did get a couple of gifts from fans at our launch party, but nothing financial.
Plus, we already get tips from armchair experts telling us how to make a video game. :D

Seriously though for larger corporations it shouldn't be an option, but for small indie dev teams I could see it working, but if a game is good, leaving a positive review is worth more to a small studio than a tip as getting your game noticed and talked about in the congested industry that video games is, is priceless.

I'd feel extreme shame if I needed tips to get by as a game dev hired by pretty much any company, there's clearly something deeply bloody wrong happening.

I would in most industries to be frank.

It's interesting this thread popped up again, I got an email from GOG yesterday saying they were introducing a new optional support model for their game preservation service they run: link . I was considering it as they've been doing some good releases recently, although if you want to support them you can just tip them when buying a game rather than a recurring donation.
