Would you watch a public execution?

No. Unfortunately I've seen (1st hand) people being killed and irrespective of whether or not they were guilty I couldn't actively want to watch it. I haven't been scarred by what I've seen, it's just sobering.

I haven't seen someone die before (well, not since I was small)

I'd go and see it. Even if it scared the hell out of me, shook me up, upset me... Still needs to be seen I think. If it does nothing other than highlight death, and the fact that we're so muted to the fact worse things are happening every second around the world, it would be beneficial.

why on earth would anyone want to watch someone die, even if they deserve is

Agreed.

I kinda see what you're saying. But I think to desensitise people to the death of others is a bit dangerous as it could cause a sort of nonchalance amongst those people towards death of a fellow human being.

I've unfortunately witnessed (from a large distance but close enough to remember the details unfortunately) what a volley of bullets and the devastation shells do. It's truly sobering and strangely surreal, but also actually really quite disturbing and upsetting.

it's a difficult balance!
At the moment, most people are blasé about death. You watch the news, how 100 people died in a blast, and you think nothing more.
Perhaps watching one, might make them think a bit more. But, as you say, it could go the other way, and desensitize others
