Would you watch a public execution?

You say it's barbaric to kill someone in a possibly painful way. Maybe these 'possibly painful' methods have been mentioned in the thread itself, but it wasn't part of the actual title/topic? Are you saying that if a painless way WAS used, you'd not be so against it (as it can no longer be considered barbaric)?
l

It would still be barbaric just not as much.
And as said it costs no more in resources to lock someone up or kill them.

And no i do not consider locking someone up for life as barbaric. We don't suddenly remove all their basic rights and torture them every day.

I saw one of the terrorist videos where they cut off some hostages head, can't remember what hostage though. But it was really disturbing - you could hear the screaming and them literally sawing away at his neck. I could watch it again, but there is no way that I would actively put myself through the experience. Hence a no from me to watching a public execution.

Obviously the man was a brutal and vicious dictator and the world is probably a better place without him, but after seeing that footage I've had enough of executions for the moment and definately would not go to watch a public execution.

I think the point is the world is a better place with him no longer having any power over anyone, which was the case once he was in custardy. I would not say the world is particularly a better place with him dead than it is with him in jail. The same goes for anyone else who is imprisoned indefinitely.

In answer to the question in the OP, no I wouldn't for two reasons. Firstly, due to my opposition to capital punishment. Secondly, because I have no desire to watch someone die.

I'd watch them.

I'd also like the Stocks to be brought back to town squares, providing the populace with a nice armoury of rotten veg to show minor offenders what they think of them.

Keeping somebody in prison all of their life for murder will be a drain on the country in terms of its wealth.

However, would I rather that happen than we eradicate their life? Yes I would rather 'waste' something with no true worth such as money than simply remove the person from being.

Firstly from a simply moralistic point of view, it makes me feel better about myself (no other way to say it) and secondly, who is to say that the murderer will not later in life turn out to be incredibly talented in some way? Some would say they dont deserve the chance, I say that as long as they are kept away from society, who am I to decide whether somebody sick enough to personally kill another will not over 20 or 30 years in almost isolation, turn their thoughts to something magnificent?

Cliche'd but human life is the most precious thing we have, without it, everything else simply has no meaning, no amount of gold or oil, our lives GIVE those things worth.

So, I still say No, I would not watch a public execution, wheres the point other than to satisfy morbid thoughts, which I like to think I can control!

No way, it's sick and barbaric, just watching Sadam walk to the gallows was enough to make my mind up on capital punishment. A couple of colleagues saw an Al Quaeda beheading video and it messed them up big time, one was nearly physically sick.

But you surely can't compare a bunch of fundamentalist foreigners chanting and waving AKs while they saw off some poor guy's head to clinical state-sanctioned execution? Yes, Saddam's execution was 'state sanctioned' but I don't think we should be holding up the ideals of a load of hooded Muslim Iraqi fools chanting insults at the gallows as the representation of a properly carried out execution, imo. Whether pro or anti, that was a pretty bad comparison.

I saw this too, or at least the start of it, when I realised what was going on it made me feel quite ill.

So a definate no from me.

No.

Next question - could you detach yourself to be the executioner?

Hmm... Maybe. Probably not, though, if I'm being honest with myself. I suppose it depends on the method of execution, the crime committed by the condemned, and whether or not I became 'OK' (desensitised?) with it. Wouldn't know without trying, I guess. The same as most people really, I'd imagine.

No I wouldn't watch it as there's no need and would be a waste of my time. Nevermind it'd be pretty nasty to watch.
