Would your opinion of someone change....

If my girlfriend of three years started smoking she probably wouldn't be my girlfriend anymore. Simple as that, disgusting habit in my opinion!

If you told your girlfriend that I wouldn't be suprised if she thought a bit less of you!

There is being upset at anothers actions and telling them it has that affect on you.... and there is flat out telling them they can not do something. That latter is boneheaded compared to the former.

Wow, you must be so in love, that's beautiful.

Lol, sorry but I wouldn't stand for it.

Well its one of those things, I rank it up there with cheating. Same punishment for either :)

I agree and anyone considering starting smoking Now with having to stand on street corners ,outside pubs and work places like a tramp has mental issues .
I suspect though that she is testing you.

Similarly, if she started smoking wouldn't that show no regards for his feelings - thereby indicating that she doesn't love him as well. So in actual fact he's best off getting out of the relationship?

There's that, but there's also the fact that your partner can't control you. I can see why he'd be annoyed, but I just think if you're in love, for it to be that cut and dry is a bit.. odd.

I honestly can't believe you rank smoking on par with cheating. How is smoking a complete betrayal of your love and commitment for one another?

Sorry, but it is quite bizzare you have that viewpoint, no offense.

Well ok I can see that some find it odd.

But; if my girlfriend loves me she will know that I cannot tolerate smoking at all. So for her to take up smoking would be so incredibly inconsiderate that it would show me she couldn't really give a damn about my feelings (yes I can see the argument for me not caring about her feelings should she wish to start smoking). I chose wisely though, I know she'll never start smoking ;).

Answer: No

Reason: I am not holier than thou.

If they enjoy it, fine by me. I might not but who I am to be so self righteous so as to look down upon them.

We all have our faults...seems some people here need to get over themselves...

What if, for example, your girlfriend found motorbikes really scary, and forbade you from owning one?

Would you go along with it even if it was a dream of yours to ride one?

My gf does smoke, and I don't understand this "ashtray mouth" comment. Maybe menthols don't make you taste of ash or something

When my wife smoked (and I didn't) I didn't notice it either, so long as you're not retarded enough to try and eat her face off as soon as she puts one out.

I'm scared ******** with the thought of getting on a motorbike, so that wouldn't matter :p.

On a more serious note though I know there are comparisons to be drawn to most matters, and that compromise is the way forward. Something like smoking I could not tolerate on any level though.

Absolutely - no question about it.

What I can't understand is those that start smoking later in life.
My Dad started when he was 45 and I have 2 mates who started around the age of 40.
None of them had ever smoked before.

I do understand that riding a bike is a lot more useful than smoking, but it does come back to the same thing.. it's up to a person what they do, and even as their significant other of many years, no one really has any right to demand someone stops doing something.
