WoW - 10 Million Subscribers

It is a ridiculous amount of players to be fair well done to them, I've never even wanted to try the game personally it just looks poor.

they always seem to be expanding constantly, seems like every week or so theres a new couple of servers because they fill up :P

Blizzard have never been one to do ground-breaking graphics, nearly every game they release looks dated by at the very least 2-3 years. Even by the time Starcraft 2 is released it'll be superseded. But then their games weren't renowned for looking good, but always playing/running well.

I personally don't think it's true as there have been no servers for over a year despite a constant stream of new servers for the first two years, at a rate of at least one every two to three months.

World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition

World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

I'm as much of a WoW fan as anyone - i've gone back recently after a break and i'm actually enjoying the game once more - but I think that's a complete load of rubbish.

(It's not like anyone can disprove it anyway!) ;)

Quite a while back they moved all the realms onto new hardware that allowed them to support a greater population - I think it was Drysc who recently gave this as the reason for lack of new realms. The new platform has allowed them to up the population cap on existing realms where necessary.

Either way I think it's fairly clear that growth in the NA and European markets has tapered off (though they do still claim to be growing), but it's Asia that has seen the population explosion, as Skyboat said.

Blizzard spent along time creating an appealing, good looking(still), easily accesable and fun game to play and it's paid off beyond their wildest dreams,

good for them! congratulations! :)

Whoa, lets say about 50% of those people are heavily addicted.

5 million lives ruined :(.
Blizzard must be laughing hard from all the cash they're getting in monthly.

Their ceo's must be having a whole carpark of ferrari's & lambo's by now.

indeed, lets hope that this doesnt mean everyone and their dog will focus on creating mmos now. It could in theory also mean blizzard slowed production of other things down, to focus on keeping/attracting wow subscribers, its more financially feasable to an extent.
Luckily they are not really crazy enough to pool everything into it, lets hope the money they make will mean starcraft2 oozes in quality, unlike WoW does :D

Wow 10 million subs to a crappy game. Tried a few times to like it because it is so popular but i just couldn't force myself to put up with the types of people i was meeting there.

I must be one of the few people that has never seen WOW (apart from some "Internet is for Porn" Video on Youtube! :o:D) nor have I ever tried it.

Tbh I doubt I am likely to (don't even know if theres a "demo" ? )

:o

There is a free trial, 14 days I think. :)

Nice - 'tis a shame they've distributed that over thousands of servers or whatever, I'd rather play with more than a few thousand people who are all 70.

The game gets a lot of hate and there ARE a whole mass of idiot players. Been in since beta and in a good, v social guild (a lot of us now have met in person) that's doing well in game (vashj and kael left to down before we hit black temple for those that know the game well enough) and it makes a huge difference to the quality of grouped play. Even none-guild runs tend to go well as groups are pulled from friends in other "top" guilds. Those that arent are hit and miss but theres a lot of decent folk in game too.

In short - its probably a bit of an uphill struggle to get into now but can still be very rewarding :)

From this companies are going to relise that monthly subscriptions are the way forward, it reduces cheating and stops piracy, they can then go free to play with adds when they start to die.

I wish they put more effort into it being on 1 server like EvE, it is only just an MMO, how many players can 1 server sustain? and even then most is instanced.

While in theory this is true. The problem is dermographics. The worlds largest market for MMO's is asia, specifically China & Korea, and to them the subscription based MMO is a lot less appealing. Now some people would say this is good as it would reduce the number of 'farmers' but, at the same time, it would reduce the amount of money avaliable to the developers and that would have a negative detraction from the industry
