WoW Addiction

Im sure you can still download the game client anyway :p.

I actually tried to recently - my CDs are at home - and I could find the US version to download (from the Fileplanet trial) but not a European version. Don't think it will work.

Yep US client wont work for UK servers.

People who commit suicide or have very serious addictions to things like this have underlying psychological issues. Severe addiction to a PC game is at least partly a symptom of something else and glossing over the real problems to blame it on a game is not a good thing.

Then again, these games are designed to be as addictive as possible in order to keep people playing for the longest time, but I think there has to be some psychological predisposition to become dependent on them.

The media always love this stuff, though. Sells papers.

Can't really see how they can sue a developer for making a game that's "too addictive". I mean you wouldn't go round suing all the food companies for making you fat and giving you heart disease, diabities etc. Otherwise if people did we would have no food companies and would all starve to death. If you can't stop playing a game to a point where it stops you from having a normal fulfilling life then it's really your problem and it's not the developer's fault. People who do try and sue for them for that are really either very dumb or simply trying to get rich fast, but any judge with any common sense would simply tell them to bugger off but with today's media assault on games it's uncertain and people do stand a chance of winning these claims.

Well if people started blaming gaming companies for addiction to games, it would be no different for blaming tobacco industry's advertising for getting them addicted. If u look at the content of a lot of cigarette advertising ( or at least in the past), you will find references to daily life, in effect promoting an every day occurance to triggering the thought of cigarettes. Clearly preying on a smokers weakened psychology due to being addicted.

Most of the time spent in MMORGS is purely repetitive stages, the main hurdle being the time taken to complete the task. If games were restricted in the length of time that they can gate the progress, then in effect you would have the same game but, not take so much time to do a single task.

Then the seriously addicted would run out of options once they have done everything, but the game itself is complete and the not so addicted would still find it takes a good length of time (back to the kind of time span single player games have).

I dont think u can attack the seriously addicted gamers for giving the press the ammunition they need to question the gaming industry. I gave the best case senario of what changes could be forced on the gaming industry to protect the more vunerable types in the previous two paragraphs.

However what changes are actually likely? Just look at pubs. There are alcoholics, but drink is still available; even extending the opening hours. I dont think u need to fear that video games will be banned or made less addictive.

Also its not people who are inherently "bad" its circumstances in which they live which can lead addictions of sorts. For example an alcoholic may not be happy with a certain aspect of their life, and try to block it out with drink.

Equally an example of reason a person could become addicted to games is if they are bullied and really dont have freinds IRL. Substituting online friends would really be a compelling reason to be addicted, but does this make them inherently bad people?

I guess we are really in agreement afterall.

I never attacked people or said they were bad I simply said they shouldn't blame the games for being too addictive but simply realise that they have a problem and the game is simply manifestation of those problems and they can't blame them but should rather seek advice on their problems. In my eyes this is about as stupid as suing McDonalds for making you fat. Well duh burgers aren't made of salad. You don't get approached my men with guns telling you to go to eat there, it's your choice and if you're had 8 burgers a day there and then sue them for being fat, well frankly that's your fault. In today's world we all know that fatty foods in excess amounts are bad for us.

World of Warcraft

I decided to take the plunge 8 weeks ago. Because of the bad press that Everquest had back in 2001, I was skeptical to join an online RPG for quite some time because of the reported addictiveness of Everquest. I probably wouldn't have enrolled on Warcraft had it not been for one of my best mates who introduced me to WOW.

Now, I have created as follows:

- An orc-warlock called Miltie, male, level 16
- A human-warlock called Tangela, female, level 42
- A human-warrior called Monserrat, male, level 9

The trouble was that I played the game for about 1 hour every night up until last week, which doesn't seem too bad. Then last month, my female warlock came across a couple of other new online characters and we've now tallied up as a group. We do quests together and it takes up most of my evening! That's why my female has become my main. I've told them that I'm really a male playing behind that character otherwise it seems bad/dishonest not to let them know.

Addictive huh! Hopefully, fear not because I have Salsa class tomorrow night, curry night on Thursday and then one or two clubbing events in the near future. I also got my new disco lights, so I'll be playing with those a lot as well.

If you do play Warcraft, take a look at this addiction quiz.

Ha how long did that last ;)

I play wow with my guild with most endgame stuff (mc all on farm, onyxia on farm, zg on farm, upto vael in bwl) my /played is 84 days... Yet i don't let it run my life, that revolves around my girlfriend and work and you certainly don't find me playing wow on friday or saturday nights as thats when i'm out with friends...

I'd say i play 3 or 4 nights a week for 5+ hours, that might seem a lot but i don't do much else when at home... :)
