Wow - newbie guide/help ?

I say 40 to get a good feel for a class.

If you judged a class on it's first twenty levels, you'd probably never make it to 60. I can't think of a class that doesn't suck pre-20, most of the awesome abilities come 20-40.

Plus you end up doing normally one or two instances pre-20, how can you really judge a class performing as part of a group based on one performance? Especially considering the standard of people to group with at 20 is fairly damn poor.

Well i wont argue about raid roles or class abilities 20-70.

But you will generally get an idea* of what the class is by around level 20, not an exact science mind. I believe by this point all classes have 'key' abilities, eg. stealth, shapeshift, totems, heals, dual wield, pets, etc...

*=the basic principle and playstyle of what the character encompasses

you can read all of that above from the description of the class though. Wont carry this on further though as its pointless trying to reason with people who have only experienced half the game :/

Oh don't be such an elitist game-snob.

As Vixen said, you do get a feel for the playstyle of a class by level 20.Notice "Feel" in that sentence. The nuances and character idiosyncracies that you learn as you get deeper into the game only add to the initial feel.

Hunters are and will always be a ranged damage class.Warriors are and will always be a melee class.Mages are and always will be offensive magic users.People rolling hunters expecting to be able to primarily melee or cast will understand that they should re-roll by the time they reach level 20.

Now please, try not to be a forum troll by suggesting that you are the omnipotent MMO God because you have experienced more than,as you put it, "Half the game :-/"...you just make yourself sound very arrogant and ill-informed.

To the OP..try all classes..you can create 10 per server :D.You'll get a good idea by the time you are level 20 which doesn't take long at all.

Fine, reason flies out of the window here...

Dayloon, first of all you could gather a least a basic guide from here or just ask a few questions in specific and people will be able to help.

To those flaming me (because that really is all youre doing) have you not thought about what happens if they do enjoy playing wow? What if they get to level 70 and think "Hey, lets join a guild that going to these raid instances where i can experience the challenges WoW has to offer" and then realise that the class theyve spent months working on just isnt fun any more and they'd actually rather be doing what that other class is doing?

At this point your pre-20 character is nothing like what you have now. Not everyone wants to raid but not everyone wants to stick to pvp either, how can you not see this from 2 perspectives? Personally i havent been too bothered with pvp since TBC came out as there is so much else to do, i really enjoy working with 24 other people to overcome whatever blizzard throws at us, and we're doing it pretty well being in the top10 guilds in the world.

So whats to say he doesnt want to try that? Unless someone tells you otherwise, you will only get a feel for your class role after level 20 until you are beyond level 20, the same applies for 40 60 and 70, it changes as you level.

"Hunters are and will always be a ranged damage class.Warriors are and will always be a melee class.Mages are and always will be offensive magic users." common sense alert, anyone can read that from the wow site.

My opinion is, play the class you'll be wanting to play when theres no more levelling to do. Certain classes are best at certain things, trying to hybrid will just ruin your chances of doing anything useful so why not get as much advice as possible now to save you getting a 2nd char to 70 to fix the first mistakes?

Oh get over yourself. You have no idea what experience myself or anyone else posting has with endgame.

Regardless of whether the OP decides he enjoys leveling, pvp or end game pve, he will get a very good idea of what every class is like well before he could ever hit 70.

EDIT: don't bother replying to me, I'm sick of your elitist attitude in every WoW post, so I'm just sticking you on ignore.

Its true you can get a vague 'feel' for the class in the lower levels but what Anim says in this thread is correct really in my opinion.

A question to the other people in the thread; What happened to sanity ? At least i tried to be helpful :(

classes change massively when you get to endgame. You spec for levelling as you're levelling (duh), if you want to pvp there are talent builds for each class for that tbh, the same applies to raiding when you will distrobute points to what you feel will help you do your job the best.

Theres an awful lot wow has to offer and admittedly until you get to the later points of the game you wont really know what you want unless you've played other mmo's before.
