Hi i have never played an MMO before but want to play wow i dont know what best class or race would be good for me. i was hoping maybe mage or warlock

anyone help

Generally, it's a very addictive game for some people. If you give in to it, then say goodbye to family/friends/lovers/social life.

Mage/Warlock/Hunters are a good class to start with and level pretty quickly to 70, especially Hunters. I'd start with a Warlock as they have pets like Hunters, and do damage overtime, so no need to get close to the mob and get your' health down.

Why will it

Dude, its very, very addictive.

At first, you'll play for a hour here and there, but very very soon it gets grip and you find youself playing for 8+ hours a day!

You tend to feel like you would rather quest/raid than go out with your friends, lol, rather grind for that special item for hours on end.

Also, one errand/quest turns in to 5 or 6. and before you know it, its 4am and your thinking WTF am I doing up?

But if you still want to go ahead and sign your life away, then best race from my opinion would be Rogue (very fun, but now servers are overun with them) Mage, Priest (need more priests on some servers), Like Vita said, Warlock/Hunters are good for first time.

Don't get me wrong WoW is a very good game, it is just very addictive.

To be honest, the races only have a very slight differences, and are mainly asthetic differences. As for classes depends on what appeals to you

Hunters, walocks and mages do ranged damage, hunters can tame creatures you see around azeroth and have them fighting for you. Walocks can summon demons.

Druids are an all round class, they can heal do DPS and tank, they shape shift into different form, thet can take of the fom of a lion/panther for DPS, a bear for tanking etc.

Shamen bit a of a weird class, not played one tbh so don't know much about them:p They give enchants to other players to boost their stats and are also healers.

Paladins are healers that wear heavy armour, before the expansion everyone hated them.

Rogues are the stealthy class they can hide in the shadows, and ambush enemies. They do a lot of damage and use daggers and swords, but wear light armour.

Warriors are the vanilla class in WoW big weapons and heavy armour, or at the end game you'll probably be tanking, which means you'll be the one stood at the front of the fight getting the **** kicked out of you all the time

Priest, the best healers in the game. You're there to heal and will probably be one of the most popular ppl on your server if you roll a Priest. You can also do a lot of damage if you become a Shadow Priest, but the main thing for priests is to heal.

*I'm sure this is going get picked apart but I think it's simple overview of the different classes.

As a mage, I would roll a lock.

They have very little downtime while leveling, due to how the class works. Much better for pvp and capable of doing much better damage in pve due to how well they scale with gear.

A mage is fun to play but they are one of the weakest classes atm.

People get dragged into WOW and never come out. Same reason I never started it. It'll be OK as long as you retain control of you life and limit how much you play a day.

ARGH people like you annoy the hell outta me! stop slagging off a game which uve never played, just because some people get addicted doesnt mean everyone will. people get addicted to everything doesnt mean we should warn them off everything also. if he wants to give it a try let him.

as for starting off, i always enjoyed a hunter and rogue to start with, both good fun to play :)

Classic signs of addiction tbh ;)

There is nothing wrong with the game, just go and enjoy it it's fun

Somewhat excessive reaction to someone warning the OP to not get addicted...

Personally your more likely to get addicted to Fags/drugs/beer then WoW.

I've been playing the game for 4 years, i've taken many breaks spanning months/years, the only reason i came back is due to the lack of other games to keep me interested.

There is a new PVE server that just opened called Blades Edge.

It would be a good place to roll a character due to lots of people being low levels which will help you questing. And you start off on a more even footing.

BTW, don't think leveling is hte game. The game doesn't start until Your 70 and doing end game raiding/PVP!

I'm a heavey player - 5/6 nights a week. But i'm well known for leaving in the middle of a raid to go out with mates. Just don't let it get on top of you and your be fine.

Yeah I can agree with above, I have taken many breaks, weeks, months and at the longest I was not playing for about a year.

It is an addictive game in its own right, but its prob one of the best games i've played.

I myself, found it easy to quit it, when I had enough, I had enough and kinda lost interest and moved onto something else.

So its not like its soooo addictive you won't be able to leave alone. (although some people struggle to go a hour with wow).

Time flys when your playing it I found, I would just nip on for a quick go, and before I know it, I was doing follow up quests to the quest I came on to do and then log off.

I spose you have just got to try it and see for yourself. Get a 10 day free trial, although you can pick up the game now for £7.99 with a free months play.

i started about 3 months ago and my main char turned lvl 70 last week. i must say ive loved every minute and well worth a go

try the 10 day free trial

MW

i think people go on far to much about the addiction to it just learn to control its honestly not that hard lol :p
I'd suggest a Shaman as a first char its brilliant for lvling. Not all that good for end game but still i really enjoyed lvling my shammy

There isn't really a class that you should avoid...they've all got their own advantages and disadvantages. What you need to look at are the talent trees for each class. For example, a priest has a Holy, Discipline and Shadow tree.

If you go down the Holy tree then effectively this specialises you for healing..this is good in groups but if you intend to solo a lot then its not much use. On the other hand, Shadow is a damage dealing tree, and allows you to maximise your damage output, but not be able to heal so effectively.

Similarly, a Shaman has a talent tree to specialise in healing called Restoration (again not very good for solo leveling up), and a tree for doing melee damage (Enhancement), which is good for levelling.

When you get to the maximum level, then you will typically tend to do a lot more group activities or raids. For these you will 'respec' to the role you prefer to do, such as healing...this means you move all your talent points to another tree. It costs a bit of in-game money but not too much.

Also with the new expansion (Wrath of the Lich King) due later this year then its hard to predict exactly how the classes will get changed, so what may be considered a worse class now may not be at level 80.

I'd say just pick a class based on what you think you'd like to play and take a bit of time to read up about the talent trees to determine how best to level up and also the options available at maximum level.

Regarding race, then once you have decided what class you'd like to play then do a little reading up on the net about what is the best race to have for that class. The race does make a small difference and it is worth picking a good match.

That's rubbish! For a lot of people, the game is all about leveling and ends at 70. I have 5 level 70s and a handful of other low level alts because I much prefer leveling to raiding. The game is what you make it.
