WTF did I just see??

They were in perfect formation, and remained the exact same distance from each other. They then went behind a small area of cloud cover, and never re-emerged the other side.

It's unlikely you'd be able to have the conception of what a number of lantern sized objects travelling in the wind at that cloud altitude would look like. As well as being able to tell he slight variations in distance between one another making it look like they are keeping perfect formation.

Don't believe me? Throw away some chump change on a few balloons and wait till they are very high but still visible to the human eye and see how "perfect a formation" they keep :).

Very weird. Of course, the obvious explanation would be Chinese lanterns, however I really wish it'd be something different. :(

We just can't be the only ones out there. :/

Obvious thought is Chinese Lanterns, but surely a group of them wouldn't maintain a perfect formation, and keep a perfect distance from each other? And why did they completely vanish?

If it's high enough to go behind clouds (and in the dark) you aren't exactly going to be able to notice even a couple of dozen meters drift in an object that high let alone perfect formation.
