WTF Paypal !?

I just sold something on ebay that is big and heavy and stated "collection in person only". I didn't want to offer paypal on a collection only item but ebay forced me to offer it. Paypal have held the money for 21 days and asked me to provide tracking information.

So now some bloke is going to pick up the item and leave while I still have nothing to show for it. Oh and let's not forget that if he decides to reverse the transaction later on Paypal will ask me to provide proof of delivery of the item.

sorry but i dont get it

i understand you had to offer paypal on the listing, but just put in the listing its collection only? and if he has paid, just refund him and tell him to pay when he comes to pick it up?

why on earth would you let someone collect something from you, and not pay you hand in cash?!

I had my account limited a few months ago, apparently because of the amount going through my PayPal account I was being investigated for money laundering  It was ridiculous, around the £1500 mark in a year and they thought something was wrong with this (Bare in mind I sold my PC and that came to around £1000). But one phone call to PayPal and it was sorted within minutes, the woman apologised and reset my account. I'm still a tiny bit unsure of using PayPal.

I can't believe anyone would use Cheques for ebay.

Aside from being an outdated payment method.
You are saying you have to wait for the buyer to send you the cheque, cash it, then wait for it to clear before sending the item out. It offers the buyer little in the way of intermediary protection that you get with Paypal and also means it's much longer for them to get their item.

If I saw a listing with Cheque payment only I'd skip it.

They have a lot of automated systems in place to detect unusual activity. The thing is that it detects unusual activity based on your usual activity. So if you happen to sell an expensive item out of the blue it will trigger the mechanism and lock your account. It's an effort to reduce the amount of problems when people's accounts get hacked and people try and use them to buy or sell expensive things. Your account will have a 'risk' factor which is calculated based on a number of unknown things (PayPal don't say).

So I would say it's not PayPal trying to punish you for using it but their automated system trying to protect your account.

Do you know how "funny" people can be on ebay? As soon as you start talking about problems with payment and refunds etc they start panicing and instantly go into "oh noes this is getting dodgy I'm going to get ripped off" mode.

He has paid because ebay forced me to accept Paypal and him being an inexperienced ebay user probably assumed that I had requested paypal as my preferred payment method.
