The old Mac Pro really was quite big though, bigger than most ATX towers. It's refreshing to see a company like Apple embrace SFF computing a lot more.
 
Indeed. I know what will happen tomorrow at work. The woman who has an iPhone and knows very little about phones will sing from the roof tops about how she can do X, Y and Z. Can't help but chuckle. As always with Apple though - looks sexy.

Those big cases were upgradeable, serviceable and easily secured. And don't forget, the Mac Pro is supposed to replace the Xserve.

This is just consumerisation of the professional line, much like they did with the retina MBP. It looks super cool but at the expense of practicality.
