WWIIO: Battleground Europe

Not as far as I know, although I guess http://unity3d.com/unity/whats-new/unity-2.0.html gives you some kind of idea.

However, I really cant see it looking much like those screenshots and still remaining playable.

That's actually a completely different engine. There's actually a legal battle still ongoing about their use of Unity as the name for the engine. CRS had it long before this company started.

Any screenshots / videos of the new Unity 2 engine in action?

Unity 2 at first will look pretty similiar. What it will do though is let them use higher poly models and better shader effects along with a better detailed terrain. We'll see all those come in through '09. This time next year it'll hopefully look a lot different then it does now :)

1st play went well. My very first sortie in a Hawk-75 resulted in downing a Bf-109E4 and destroying a German 40mm FlaK 28 with strafing attacks, then in my second sortie, chewing a JU-87 apart. Then to further hook me in, I managed to down a JU-52 making a parachute drop over Luxembourg with fire from my own 40mm Bofors :D

lol.. you're probably the only player in the game who got a kill on their first sortie ;)

And as a fighter as well. Well done! :D

Looking forward to trying out 1.29 too. Should have some time over the weekend to give it a go. Spit 1B should be fun :)

Any of you guys still playing it after trying it out? I'm still around if you need some help in game still. Try and find an active squad and they'll be more then happy to train you up.

Keep an eye out in game for a guy called Fearny. He's a dedicated trainer so will be able to take you to the training server for some 1 on 1 training if you want or he can just help you out on the live server. Tell him I sent you :)

It's a bit hard at the start to get used to finding the enemy. Definitely find a good squad and try following them around.

There was one guy on here who I played with a month or two back and just led him around finding enemy mobile spawns and that sort of thing. Once you know which direction from town they are coming from (check your map for contact reports) then just either hang around the edge of town at that side or move out around 0.5-1km out of town and look for their mobile spawns (trucks).

If there's nothing happening in the town you're in then just try a different town. Listen to the side channel and ops channel and check to see which town names are coming up.

And keep an ear out for para missions or armoured columns. Even if you can't spawn any great armour (or are too nervous to (I know I was for the first month or two)) then you can still take a rifle and grab a ride with one of them and cover them from sappers.

Give Ce a message in game and if he's on he's bound to have something planned.

We just had en event to commemorate pearl harbour. No japanese in game so we had to use stukas but it was still a fantastic event. Around 70-80 people flying stukas with around 50 or so naval players in 30 ships. We used antwerp harbour because it's the closest to the real thing in game atm.

It really showed how great this game can be when you have such a massive amount of people playing together. I was flying a stuka myself but my fraps has been acting up while recording in game so I was only able to take a couple of screenshots. No video from me but another guy got some great video here:
http://www.s-on.co.uk/13th/ph.html

And one of the devs was on in their freeview bird taking some great video, just waiting on people to edit his raw video footage then I'll post the link here too.

There were 2 waves of 4 sections each. The first wave involved section 1 and 2 diving from the north while section 3 and 4 dived from the south. Was absolutely awe-inspiring watching so many planes come in in perfect sync diving and bombing.

My target of choice was the USS New Orleans. Dropped my 250kg and 4 50kgs on here in both waves but she was still afloat albeit with a 30 degree list by the end. The allies ended up winning the event according to the victory conditions set forth because they shot so many of us down :)

Anyway here are my two screenshots:

Looks good Darg. How long did the whole attack last and how the hell do you organise an event like this?:p

I didn't organise it. It was a guy called Malize who came up with the idea and wrote the scenario. Jammyman who is a dev helped as well. Jammy is generally in charge of the events.

It was supposed to start at 6 but it took until 7 before we first lifted off with getting all the ships into position and all the pilots into their sections. Was about a 15min flight, only a few minutes over target then 15min flight back.

About 5-10 minutes rest then we took off for the second wave. 45 minutes between waves so we were finished about 8 or just after.

EDIT: it was being organised for 2 weeks beforehand. I only just saw it that day so I was lucky to get in.

Can I ask, although I know the gameplay is moderately paced (Which suits me fine), how fast is spawning? I can't see it being instant but if I die (Likely to start with) am I going to be waiting for like 20 minutes to respawn or something?

When you die, if you're infantry you can immediately go back to the main menu, from there you can spawn back in. If you're quick with the buttons you can generally be back in within 10 seconds. Assuming the supply is there and your spawn point hasn't been destroyed/captured. When in a vehicle it imposes a 10 second wait before you can despawn to the main menu.

Also, how much do infantry impact the game? Is it a case of the second you unlock tanks (By the sounds of it, when you rank up you can spawn as a tank) you always go tank, or do a lot of people go footslogging aswell? I've never minded fighting tanks, I just don't like commanding them. I'm a grunt and I know it.

Most people play as infantry, my favourite weapon is still the rifle and I'd say 90% of the time I spawn in it's as rifle. The other weapons and vehicles are more a sort of useful alternative at times. When starting a town attack for instance it's good to get tanks and ATGs surrounding the target and then set up mobile spawn points and use those to spawn in infantry closer to the town. Infantry are what win battles, tanks are just there as support.

1. I understand that the division/battalion commander calls an attack on a certain town, and then that town opens for capture. If you're in a different div/bat, can you swap to go attack that town? If I can, am I going to be slogging it all the way, or is there some way to 'jump' to the respawn point the attackers are using? The same in reverse, if someone attacks my teams towns, can I jump there?

All you have to do is despawn (10 second timer) then in the main menu you pick the division/brigade to spawn in with, pick a mission (which has a set spawn point) and then spawn in. Usuaully you'll find yourself spawning out of MSPs on an attack and their min distance to an enemy depot is 500m so you'll have to slog that but it only takes a couple of minutes and generally there'll be enemies in the way.

2. Can someone get me an ingame screenshot of like the strategic map that shows you what's going on? I'd love to see how it's setup. (If the map works at various altitudes, IE whole battlefield of europe, then certain areas or whatever, then like the area that's currently contested, I would appreciate it if I could see multiples.)

Have a look at this nice tool. The map is very similiar to what you have in the game. There's not as much information on the ingame map but it's basically the same:
http://begm.sourceforge.net/

3. I see on the website there is supply lines. How do these affect the game?

Each brigade has it's own supply. Generally around 800 infantry and 40 different tanks. There are armoured brigades which have less infantry and more tanks. Each time you spawn in you take that unit off the supply list. If you return to base (despawn) without getting killed then the unit immediately goes back on the list. If you die then it doesn't. If you go MIA (despawn too far from a friendly depot) then it takes 30 minutes to get back into supply.

Each brigades supply is trickle fed from factories far in the rear. If supply is cut (ie there isn't a clear line of friendly linked towns from the brigade to the factories) then the brigade doesn't get any new supply.

Factories can also be damaged by bombers and infantry sappers to slow supply.

Feel free to ask any more questions :)

EDIT:
Edit. Been reading the wwiio wiki and wow...many people arn't getting xmas pressies from me this year so I can get my new rig quicker. I require this game.

lol... yea a lot of people get addicted to this game. In a good way unlike other MMORPGs I could mention ;)

What are missions comprised of? I'm guessing bombing runs are one, and possibly AOs, but is there anything else?

The missions themselves are generic. The only thing that might be different from mission A to mission B would be the spawn point and target (if on attack). So it's pretty much up to the mission leader to make sure the people on his mission know what the plan is if there is one. He can do this by setting the mission orders which is basically a line or two of text that sit at the top of your screen. So on attack a mission would be from point A to attack point B. On defense a mission would be from point A to defend point B (or just defend point A).

Also, about supply; How fast do for example infantry reserves in a Brigade regenerate?

I'm not sure of the exact figures. Generally there's a decent bit of supply back in after 3-4 hours off the front line.

Do supply lines have any other factors? It seems to me that cutting off a supply route is nigh impossible (Surrounding a town seems like it would take far too long if battles can rage for days; capturing 3 towns just to surround one seems pointless)

Sometimes that's the only way to get past a particularly hard town. If it's an easily defendable town with a couple of brigades in there that's just wasting your supply when you attack it then a lot of times you'll find it easier to spend the time attacking the towns around it and cutting it off.

The biggest movements in the game happen after a division or two have been cut off which leaves a huge hole in the front line for the opposing side to charge through.

I may have to get round to trying to try it out again, I'm quite surprised the whole game engine hasn't been updated by now but atleast it sounds like they're making progress.

They've half way completed the crossover to the new engine. With the next patch it will be completely switched over to Unity2

Anyone who wants me to send them a gift will have to email me themselves. I won't have time over the next few days to be checking back here. My email is in trust, feel free to send me a request :)

The thing with the new patch is that it has a lot of improvements that can't be seen. It basically lets them put a LOT of new stuff in game that can be seen and they'll be doing that (and have been doing so in the background) for 1.31 :)

It's definitely worth a try, I played this game for years ( just realised this is my thread, I forgot I started it :)) and loved every minute, just ran out of money a year or more ago and time to play it. Now any time I do get to play its either going to BF3 or minecraft.

I'm sure I'll get back into wwiio at some point though, I already feel the urge to resub.
