X-Factor 2012

He's singing the words, but there is no soul.

That's my problem with Jahmene right there.

I've heard that song a hundred times or more, and there was nothing there for me.

Therefore money not wasted
Well, wasted in the sense that she'll be successful whether I spent that money or not*. I just hoped it'd keep her in and give me something potentially interesting to listen to on a Saturday night for a few more weeks. I really can't raise any more enthusiasm for the likeable chipmunk, or James Arthur singing the same song with different words again. Someone needs to teach him how to open his jaw properly and sing rather than regurgitate lyrics.

*Having said that, I hardly use my mobile and thanks to getting £15 in discounts off my O2 broadband whenever I top up with £10 every 3 months, I have a rather large slush fund to play with. So I shouldn't complain.

She'll be releasing a single at some point, would be a total failure if someone like that hasnt raised enough interest to get a record out. Therefore money not wasted

Which demographic that would buy her records?

I was watching XFactor USA and they showed Cher Lloyd. She is apparently a double platinum selling artist in the USA. Cher is also looking attractive these days. I know exactly who is buying her records - young teenage girls who want to be like her. Cher's style is young, bubble gum pop - perfect for the teenage market. When Britney Spears first made it big, she was targeting the young teenage female market.

Ella's problem is that she is not good looking and she can't sing bubble gum pop. Younger girls don't want to look like her or listen to her boring ballads. So, if she succeeds, she will need to target the older generation/demographic (the people who buy Adele, ie. those who don't care about a singer's looks). I have no idea if that demographic would buy into Ella.

I have my doubts.

Ella should've been in a group of attractive females. They'd provide the sex appeal and looks, while she'd provide the voice. That might've worked.

Trust me, he's a good kid and it's all true :(.
I think it's easy for all of us to be cynical about the traditional x-factor sob stories, but if his past is as troubled as we're told then it's unfair to target him as some kind of loser. A lousy childhood can be very, very hard to escape. It moulds your character is ways which go very deep, and it'd be nice if some good opportunities come out of this for him even though I'm personally unmoved by his performances.

Going back to Ella, for me the Adele comparison is fairly legitimate. She doesn't really need a specific demographic because she just has one of those voices which can reach anyone. Well, maybe not anyone, but a significant proportion of folk. That doesn't guarantee her long term success or widespread sales, but it's a darned good start for someone so young.

Of course there's a concern that she'll struggle for sales in the same way she struggled for votes. It'll be interesting to see what happens this time next year when an album comes out.

As someone intrigued by Devlin's voice last year I've been following her progress and her kickstarter style pledge system for the upcoming album seems to be making slow progress despite 300k twitter followers who you'd expect to be fairly enthusiastic. Maybe they're all too young to pay on the net.

Mmm... in which case I should probably be ashamed of myself. :-)

Just caught up on this from last night... I must admit i'm feeling a little sorry for Christopher Maloney, he got some pretty unnecessary criticism last night, and it's clear they just don't like him. He looked really uncomfortable (understandably) when he was listening to their feedback, and **** knows what Nicole was talking about with the skimmed milk stuff, she contnues to make me cringe every time she opens her mouth. She just drones on and on and on whils saying absolutely nothing worthwhile, primary example being after Jahmenes second performance.

James Arthur put in a great performance again, Jahmene was as usual decent but massively overrated. Union J also put in a good show, really good vocals. It will be interesting to see who goes out tonight.
