X-Fi Advice!

My X-Fi has been playing havok with my 650i board, absolutely kill the performance if i plug it in. Works like a treat on my old 939 board, which is nice.

I have the same board and it works fine for me

Noticed drivers install quite a few services, any that aren't required for normal use?
When you install there is an option to install only the essential gamer files which I'd hope installs less services

Been looking through all the X-Fi range now for some time and basically established that they are all identical specifications apart from Two that use the X-Ram component.

I was wondering what Alternative to X-Fi would there be if any?

TBH i dont think there would be much point in looking elsewhere other than Creative. I have the Extreme Gamer card, bought what i though was the OEM version, but came in the nice box etc (thanks OCUK!!)

Works a treat and made a massive difference over my old Creative Audigy 5.1 player OEM.

Works perfectly with my 7.1 Inspire Speakers also, though needed to flip the switch on the Sub to change it to 7.1 as opposed to mixing to 5.1.

For gaming/general machine then probably yes. But music only system (analogue) then I would look at M-Audio.

The X-Fi was a huge upgrade from onboard Realtek 882, the 882 just lacked soundstaging and dynamics.

Good post After reading through and visiting Creative's website I have noticed these things:

The gamer pro has 64mb of X-RAM and it looks different. Those are the only differences in spec wise that and the connections.

So X-RAM? basically first of all you need a game that supports it... note that the X-RAM does not improve sound quality at all. What it does is take the sound data that is stored in the memory and stores it on the sound cards X-RAM. Well this doesn't bother me as I am getting 4g of memory anyway so no worries lol. Realy you have to think of it this way...Would you pay £30 for 64mb of RAM? I didn't think so :p

Can't believe you all missed the part about the xtreme gamer not having the built in dolby/dts decoders, might as well go for the xtreme music as it is £20 cheaper than the gamer and has the built in decoders, xtreme gamer is for those who only have SFF PC's..

This is not really true and the music is only cheaper because it's no longer sold retail. The Dolby LIVE decoding and DTS decoding is also a thing that's not needed by many people and iirc no xfi can output 5.1 through digital anyway so what would be the point.

It may not have a hardware decoder for the Dolby DTS stuff but it still plays them awesomely and you're not gonna be able to tell the difference when watching DVD movies anyway using any decent dvd player like windvd or nvidia purevideo which have decoders specifically for this purpose.

gives an fps boost in most games too.

I looked into this back when they first came out, that claim is BS, the difference in fps is almost nothing, in extreme cases you might get another 1-4.

xram - dont fall for it, there a very few games/apps that make use of it, off the top of my head the battlefield engine and a very small other selection of games make full use of the xram and eax5 capabilities.

integrated dts is dependant on your sound system though.

the 64xram makes it able to cope with all the "ear candy" those who say it does nothing are talking total bull or just stupid. if you can afford it get the pro gamer with out the panels (unless you need them)

on the other hand if your not playing games just use the music version

You're talking Bull.

It has been proven many many times that in games that make use of such as BF2142/BF2 etc the difference is 1-4fps compared to a non XRAM version.

It's a fad and not used to how it is advertised by Creative.

Another one gets sucked in by marketing!

First, don't resort to personal attacks, it only makes me think lower of you.
Second, i have used EVERY x-fi card out there and own an elite pro myself so i think i know what i am talking about as I've tested it myself first hand.

xram is BS, end of story.

Ok I am now at another dilemma. I have made my mind up that I am either getting the X-Fi Gamer or Music but I am not comfortable enough to make a decision as I notice the cards are completely different in looks (i.e.: board layout).

The X-Fi Xtreme Music:

The X-Fi Xtreme Gamer:

As you can see these cards are totally different in looks, what makes me worry is that they could contain totally different technologies. For example the extreme gamer looks like a modification to the cheap entry level card for X-Fi where as the Xtreme Music looks almost the exact same as all the higher models:

If anyone knows why this differnent design in board is aparrent then please mention as I am extremly curious as to why this is. :)
