When asus probe says the fan has stopped, has it actually stopped or is it spinning very slowly? As some sensors think some slow fans have stopped when they slow down. If it's stopped I suggest getting another heatsink/fan or just a fan before using the PC again.
I had a gfx card fan die on me and i wondered what the burning smell was
Seriously the first sign I got was the smell of burning PCB. (some mobo's have safety shutdown temps, which if disabled theres no guarantee it'll cut before it burns)
