i am stumped to wether its worth the extra £90ish to just get a L2 cache of 1024... is it really worth it? will i notice a difference gaming if i spent the extra? if my build has 2gb geil value and 1 7800GTX would the 4400+ make things a lot better or just marginly?

4200+
Price: £219.95 (£258.44 Including VAT at 17.5%)

4400+
Price: £284.95 (£334.82 Including VAT at 17.5%)

thanks, its always good to ask you experts :)

Don't even consider the 4200+ - might as well get an Opteron 165 :). So, you could just get the 165 and clock it, or get the 4400+. If not, the 3800+ is good. 4200+ is just not value for money.

i cant comment on optys but I've just gone from a 3800+ single core to a 4400+ X2 and I'm loving the difference.
here is a comparison of my 3dmark 06 scores, note the difference in CPU score:

3d062.jpg

3d063.jpg

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ £214.97
512Kb L2 Cache
2.0Ghz Clock Speed

AMD Opteron UP 165 Dual Core £264.32
1MB L2 Cache
1.8Ghz Clock Speed

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ £334.82
1MB L2 Cache
2.2Ghz Clock Speed

AMD Opteron UP 170 Dual Core £317.19
1MB L2 Cache
2.0Ghz Clock Speed

Any of the above are good choices, anything else doesn't represent good value in my opinion.

I see, the build you have with those scores in 3d mark 05 is pretty much same as me, 2gb ram, X2 ""00+ , 7800gtx

however, the big question is im moving from a hardcore prescott 478 (3.2ghz with ht @3.78ghz) , 2 gb ram, 6800gt AGP.....

WILL i notice some better performance with the new build of AMD? (i have never built AMD before or PCI-E before) and is it worth the 18months that i will have the AMD system for

Absolutely, you will notice a huge difference when jumping to dual core. And gaming should be much better with an AMD processor under your belt.

Assuming your 3.2Ghz P4 runs as equivalent to a P4 570 3.8Ghz, the following graph should brings things into perspective :

2500sandra1.jpg

The processor at the top is a Opteron 170 @ 2.5Ghz.

i just clocked my CPU in at 4.21ghz  after some tweeking, though an improvement from 4855 to 5119 using turbo and some manual tweeks. but thats my last attempt with this system.

so your basically saying i should go for the 4400+ rather than a 4200+ and that over 18months it will be the better chip. i can overclock it using my beasty Koolance exos 2 water cooling unit (which got my 3.2ghz prescott to 4.21ghz at under 50*C!) to something higher maybe with the 4400+

Well, I doub't your going to get over 4.21ghz out of a AMD X2 4400+, but you will find find the overclocked X2 will whip the Pentium's ass at even 2.4Ghz :)

might go for a AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939) - Retail

looks the better chip for gaming.. what do you think? (cheaper too) :D

£240 on single core seems pointless when you can have dual core instead. If you want single core, the 3700+ is the one to go for as it offers best value.

if you have the money then get the extra cache.

clock speed can be added ...cache cannot.

Not by much  . The 3800 is a dual core and I'd favor that more than the A64 4000+. You'd get a decent overclock with the other dual core chips mentioned. The chips mentioned by Explicit are more of a worthy buy. Go for one of those as opposed to the one you suggested.

opty 170 is the cpu to buy in this price point .

4200+
Price: £219.95 (£258.44 Including VAT at 17.5%)

4400+
Price: £284.95 (£334.82 Including VAT at 17.5%)

opty 170 is simply the cpu to get ;)

It does, but the dual core 4400+ will mean 1mb cache per core. The 3800+ will have only 512KB per core.

Well the opti 165 has 2 x1MB cache, i.e. 1MB per core and clocks very well. You should easily hit 2.4ghz with one of these - except you'd have two...

im stuck for choice with MAX £330 on cpu ...choice is

AMD Opteron UP 170 Dual Core San Diego 2.0GHz 2MB Cache Price: £317.19 with vat

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 90nm Price: £237.29 with vat

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ Price: £334.82 with vat

maaan this is so tough , with no previous experience of AMD too lol, help!!

The 4400+ won't disappoint (maybe because I have one). :o But you can save ~£15 and get an Opteron 170 to hit those higher clock speeds.
