X2 4200+ or the 4400+

Agreed, but the question was:

7800GT + 170, or, 7800GTX + 165

Given the two choices my recommendation is going for the faster graphics, however if there's a 3rd option, which is 7800GTX + 170, then that would be my choice also.

Hav

I would also go for the faster graphics over the faster CPU

It's just that if he hasn't ordered yet he should really go for the X1800XT, which was why I mentioned it :)

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read which post you quoted - assumed you'd quoted mine! Half asleep it seems :o

They are not making the 7800 GT anymore so once stock has gone its gone.

Same was said about the X1800, but they're still in stock and selling well. The 7800s won't vanish overnight with the release of 7900 :)

but once stock is gone thasts it.

they will be concentrating on the small 90nm design

Yes I do realise that, hence the reason why it's called discontinued. What I'm saying is, there will still be plenty of 7800s about, stocks wont finish that fast. It's safe to say that the X1900s have settled down, but the X1800s are still in stock even though they're discontinued. Likewise, the 7800s will be around for some time yet even though they are discontinued. Inevitably they will run out of stock one day, but not immediately as you seem to suggest. :)
