X2 4200+ or the 4400+

kbc said:
The 4400+ won't disappoint (maybe because I have one). :o But you can save ~£15 and get an Opteron 170 to hit those higher clock speeds.
True. I mean look at mine, but the Opti's still seem to edge it in the clocking stakes. Stock though, the 4400+ is 200mhz faster.

@ easyrider, true, but on 1.49v ;).

2.8ghz here on 1.36v

the opty is the better chip.

they need less vcore than the x2 at stock :)

its just my cousin is building to the same price scheme as me competition for our new builds, both AMD systems,
he is going
ATI X1900xtx
Athon 64 4000+
nforce 4 lanparty D
2GB gold OCZ 3200
cooling via AIR

im going:
7800GTX
opteron 170 up dual core
nforce lanparty D
2gb gold OCZ 3200
Cooling via water

best performer? we'll see, but predictions? (im going to overclock higher i think)

best performer?
well

his x1900 xtx is faster than a 7800gtx

so booner you are getting a 170?

your dual core will waste the single core 4000 in dual optimised games.

to be frank in 6 months the single core cpu will be dead in games.

simple as I'm afraid.

why get a 7800gtx? all the benchies show the x1900 being the faster card...

i smell a rat imo

you already know the answer

because its cheaper and i can afford it :) and if i want to cheat i might go SLI and show him its power lol! however i have heard about the X1900XTX being like in a league of its own ? so i guess the 7900GTX would be its competition...that aint out yet though! :p

my build will be like yours give or take some stuff

im going:
7800GTX

The x1900 xtx beats the 7800gtx in sli.

Be happy, your GTX is still better than easyrider's 7800GT. :) Mine too. :o

So the single card X1900XT-X kills 256MB 7800GTX in SLi mode?

wow thats crazy

oh and my cousin informs me that he is getting the X1800Xt 512 my bad, he cant afford the X1900XTX on the budget we set each other :D ... so its

both building to the same price AMD systems this week for a laugh.

HIS build (ATI + air cooling):

X1800XT 512
Athon 64 4000+
nforce 4 lanparty D
2GB gold OCZ 3200
cooling via AIR

My build:

7800GTX
opteron 170 up dual core
nforce lanparty D
2gb gold OCZ 3200
Cooling via water (koolance exos 2 :p )

even playing ground? or the ati will beat me? (gaming, pc mark etc)

Why don't you use a X1800XT 512 as well? Faster than a 7800GTX and around the same price.

But as for the original question,

I would personally save my money and go for the OEM X2 3800+.

I got mine a while ago and it was the retail model and it clocks 100% stable to 2.4ghz on stock volts (toledo Rev E6 core).

I couldn't see the point of spending out the extra for the X2 4200+ or 4400+ and nowhere at the time has the opty's in stock.

I really dunno why you people keep saying processors like the A64 4000+ are going to be obsolete in 6 months, cause theyre arent, theyll still play all the newer games at god knows what frames, granted not as fast as cpu's that are optimized for dual core games, companys will still do code paths for single core cpu's for a long while yet.

my opty does 2.7ghz on stock volts and 2.8ghz on 1.36v :)

so if you have the extra 100 quid there is no contest imo.

TBH the extra £100 doesn't justify the performance increased gained.

Obviously if you want to spend the extra £100 then do but if you are a bit on the fence post then go for the cheaper X2.

In your opinion, but you could say that about any pc technology.
Is spending 110 quid on a raptor for instance worth the performance gain?
For some it is.Others not.

Umm double the cache and FX 62 speeds is worth the 100 quid extra in anyone's book. ;)

What if i went for the opteron 165 up (1.8ghz 2mb L2 cache) and got the 7800GTX silent OCuk card? because i cant get that other card off my cousin now...

would the opteron work on the dfi lan party nforce 4 board? i know its socket 939 but cant see in the spec if it is compatible

what im trying to get at is
performance difference between
opty 165 up (1.8) and the opty 170 up (2.0ghz)

and the 7800gt (bfg) or the 7800gtx (ocuk)

what best , the better graphics card and slightly lower opty or the higher opty and the lower 7800GT?

sorry about the millions of questions

Go for the faster graphics and Opteron 165 - with the DFI LanParty NF4 you should be able to get similar speeds out of the 165 or 170.

Aim for 2.7GHz (which is 300 x 9 with the 165).

most opty 170's will do more than 2.7ghz and are only 30 odd quid more expensive.

I'm currently testing at 2.9ghz

The 10 multi is the better option if you have the budget.

Agreed, but the question was:

7800GT + 170, or, 7800GTX + 165

Given the two choices my recommendation is going for the faster graphics, however if there's a 3rd option, which is 7800GTX + 170, then that would be my choice also.
