Hi ...looking to buy a new processor...which would be better buying a FX57 ..or buying a X2 4800 cpu and overclocking to fx60 speeds? also what 2gb memory kit would you advise for overclocking?

Thanks..N

Mono-Core= Opteron 144/146 or SD 3700+

Dual-Core= Opteron 165/170 or X2 4400+

Memory= too many to choose from and depends on your final overclock!

Id suggest going for the FX57 if its a gaming rig.
But the X2 4800+ if you multitask more.

As for ram how about ...

G.Skill 2GB DDR HZ PC4000 (2x1GB) CAS3 Dual Channel Kit (F1-4000USU2-2GBHZ) (MY-008-GS)
G.Skill introduces their first DDR500 2GB matched pair and 1GB single module as HZ series that are compatible with AMD platform.

the x2 4800 is not worth the extra money over the x2 4400

same 1mb x2 cache..

and the 4800 is clocked at 2.4ghz... x2 4400 is clocked at 2.2ghz.. you coan easily clock the 4400 to 4800 speed.

and further

Thanks for the replies....think i'm , going to go for the fx 57 as it will be used as a gaming rig, and don't really multi task that much.

My opinion... don't waste your money on the FX57.

ACESHIGH's statement held true until a couple of months ago when games that supported multi-threading began to be released.

Go with the X2 4400+, clock it to 2.6GHz (shouldn't be a problem at all) and you have an FX60 at half the price of an FX57.

FX57 will be quicker, but only by a little bit, and only for a little while. As more and more new games support multi-threading, the FX57 will quickly lose it's advantage of higher CPU speed.

Go dual core - you won't look back mate.

I promise.

He is 100% correct, the FX57 is not worth it now.
An opteron 170 or 4400+ would be the best choice while saving you a few hundred quid which could be spent on other things such as HD's, better RAM, nicer case, higher quality PSU (you could get all that for the price diference)

Hi...hmmmmmmm just as my mind was made up *l* so would a 4400 or 4800 clocked at 2.6 ghz offer the same performance as a fx60? never usually lucky when it comes to overclocking, so thats why i was more inclined towards the fx57...but would be happy if i could get a DC to run at 2.6, do you think with this mobo MSI RD480 Neo2 Crossfire ..and ram such as OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC3200 Dual Channel Gold GX XTC Series EL-DDR CAS2 orG.Skill 2GB DDR ZX PC3200 that would be possible?

Appreciate all the comments and help :-)

Buy the Opti 170. Most clock to FX60+ speeds. They also run at lower voltages mine runs @ 2.8 1.35V (standard Volts). Ram depends on available dividers in BIOS.

Matt

The Opteron 170 costs as little as £275 depending where you shop, average price is £295, so it appears that overclockers.co.uk are selling the most expensive 170's in the world (probably).

Yes, a 4400+ or 4800+ at 2.6GHz would offer exactly the same performance as an FX60 at stock speed. It's the same chip (Toledo) at the end of the day.

As for a motherboard with an ATI chipset, if that's what you're dead set on wait for the RD580 which should be along in a couple of months. Frankly the RD480 chipset is a bit rubbish, and NF4 is much better.

Ok...going to purchase a opteron 170, whats the best motherboard to match it up with? i've had a dfi nf4 ultra d ..when they first came out and thought it was rather flakey, have they improved since initial release? what about the dfi UT RDX200CF-DR crossfire is that rubbish also? and will the gskill 2gb zx 3200 memory be ok for 2.6ghz.
