X2 4800 cpu or fx57 ?

Hi...hmmmmmmm just as my mind was made up *l* so would a 4400 or 4800 clocked at 2.6 ghz offer the same performance as a fx60?

Right, an X440 will probably clock to 2.6ghz and beyond, you have the advantage of having an 11x multiplier. But what we are finding witht he opteron 170s from OcUK they have very, very good steppings indeed (hence the high price 'cos OcUK know they are so good, so have bumped it up a little ;))

So, advice ont he CPU is to go for a opty 170 and clock it to 2.6ghz or to 2.8ghz (FX-57 speeds) - If you get it from OcUK this is highly likely. Also, if its the wrong stepping, you can send it back within 7 days and they will refund (just not the postage...).

As for the RAM, I'd go for the HZ range, which is guarenteed to run at 250mhz or DDR500. OK, it doesn't have the best timings on the planet but its still a very impressive kit indeed!

Can I ask what you current system spec is Ka0ticMind?

Well at the moment...i've only got a sapphire x1900 xtx graphics card, creative xfi soundcard, Lg dvd re writer, arctic cooler freezer 64 pro .. and two samsung spin point 80gb hard drives....just sold most of my rig to go for a crossfire setup...so i bought a MSI RD480 Neo2 Crossfire board, but i am returning it for a refund as it's not a very good over clocker and after all the comments about the ati board don't think i'll risk it....this is the spec i thought i would go for.
DFI NF4 ultra d motherboard
AMD Opteron UP 170 Dual Core San Diego 2.0GHz 2MB Cache cpu
G.Skill 2GB DDR ZX PC3200 or G.Skill 2GB DDR HZ PC4000
Sapphire X1900XTX graphics card
Creative X FI soundcard
2x Samsung spinpoint hard drives.
LG dvd re writer
Akasa UV acrylic case (always fancied one of these)
Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Red
Various akasa fans

I like the spec indeed! Good move not to go cross fire IMO, I think multi-gpus have a long way to go.

If I could recommend some changes to the spec, but on the whole you have a damned nice spec indeed!

I'd go for a A8N-Sli Premium mobo as opposed to the DFI, why?
1) As we all know the DFI is a very, very good clockers but is only good if you know exactly what you are doing.
2) I think i'm hearing some people are having problems with the DFIs and clocking 170s (i'm open to be corrected on this one).
3) Its a silent cooling system on the premium. So its just a little bit quieter.
4) If you end up with the same chip as mine (highly likely) it doesn't like much volatge so that part of the DFI board is then redundant

I'd also go for the 2gig HZ kit not the ZX, just because its better to have slightly more flexable RAM when clocking if you dont know exactly what your doing.

So thats what I would recommend. Just its all up to you.

Hope this helps.

If you can, stretch to the OCZ 4000EB's.

@Agent WD40 - I don't think there should be any problems with the Opti's tbh. I mean the X2's clock fine and it is the same core so I wouldn't have thought there would be any difference in this sense.

Fair call Smids, I though I read some where that people where having some issues with DFIs and the 170s. But it could have been in a dream. No, that would be uber geek if that happened! So i must have just imaguined it.

But thanks for the update mate.

Thanks for the replies guys.....gutted as i've just sold an Asus A8n sli premium mobo :-( one thing i did notice was the core voltage on the asus board i sold only went upto 1.47v may have been the bios i was using why it only showed up as that.

Hi...ok just about to order a 170 opty, can i ask what is a good stepping? won't be able to test it out until the new Asus A8R32-MVP motherboard is released..going to wait for that as it sounds superb, also changed the memory i had ordered to the OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC4000 Dual Channel Platinum Series EB-DDR CAS3 will that be better, thanks for all the replies.

Good choce in waiting for the mobo. And very good choice with the OCZ, it is darn good RAM!

Good stepping for a opty is CCBWE 0550 UPMW, thats more than likely what you will end up with if it was ordered from OcUK. It clocks so well but doesn't like volts too much, so be warey when OCing it.

Also, what PSU have you got Ka0ticMind?

fingers crossed i will get the same stepping then :-) these cpu's seem too good to be true...how come amd sell the fx60 for so much? surely they must be shooting themselves in the foot...releasing the opterons that clock so well.
I'm planning on buying one of the hiper 580w modular psu's as i'm going for a acrylic case..less leads the better *l*

Heh, the FX-60 is an awesum Processor, how about doing 3.4ghz from a CPU? Well thats what the FX-60s can do. I dont think opterons can do that...

Anways, good choice with the PSU, seems like a good choce buddeh.

Agent.

Hmm, I haven't come across that stepping yet mate. Its kinda annoying that its not the same across the board...

Maybe its time to test it..? I'll do some google-ing to see what I can find.
