Picked this up about a month ago, and a few things are puzzling me, can anyone help?

1] Whats the difference between the Alpha and Beta of a weapon? I'm assuming one has some advantage over the other in terms of rate of fire, range, or damage?

2] Complexes (def the right word for it there!) - I built one with a Silicon Mine (which was already up and running) and put down a Crystal fab and a Solar Plant (M), connected them up thinking that I would only need to import BoFu to feed the Crystal Fab. It didn't really work though, the Silicon Mine kept working but the others didn't seem to be feeding each other. Do they need to linked in a certain order? or does it matter which station you specify first when adding the complex? Or have I just screwed up the parameters?

3] How do you set a group of ships to patrol a sector? I tried just setting to "Attack all enemies" but they just scattered and attacked separate targets and didn't do too well?

I know this would be a lot better on the official forum but I can't access it - it's blocked cos it's a gaming related site :(

1] Alpha = lowest power, lowest range. Beta = medium. Gamma = High End

2] It doesn't matter the order they are connected in, it should start working. Are you sure you are not missing some other resorces

3] There is a patrol sector option, you might need to buy the fight command v2 software. When you have the option you need to set 4 waypoints in the system for it to patrol

Cool thanks, so the Beta is always better than the Alpha in every way? (except energy consumption I assume). For the sector patrol, will the ships patrol as a fleet with one ship leading, or go separately?

Yeah the beta and gamma will use more power.
If its a fleet stick one on patrol, and the others to protect the one on patrol. Or you can get some mods with better fleet commands.

Also if you dont know about it, I'd highly recommend the XTM mod which egosoft have promoted. Its very good. (does make the game a bit harder though)

Just what does XTM give you? Well...

- an incredible 90 new universe sectors, including the Terran Solar System and new race sectors
- over 90 new ships from all races, including the M0 and a selection of ships remodelled and brought back from X2
- new in-game effects, from weapons to soundtracks to planets
- new commands, new stations, new wares and commodities, even new ship types.
- and lots more

Beta or Gamma weapons are not always the best choice depending on what ship you are flying. For instance BHEPTs are very powerful but quite slow so they are worse against small fighters than the AHEPT.

Your complex should work, have you set it trade with other races and have you set the price of Bofu high enough to attract traders?

Be careful what you send out on patrol as you will tend to lose M3s and lower and even M6s aren't too hot unless you send a pair of them. Elephants used to be the daddy at sector patrols but even they can get destroyed by Xenon patrols with a few LXs in them. OOS (out of sector) ships need to have the biggest guns and shields you can put on them. IS (in sector) an Elephant with BPPCs will never hit a thing and get destroyed quite quickly, OOS however and an Elephant will tear most enemies a new one. Patrols are only good for gaining race rep and not particularly for protecting your own stations. If one of your stations gets attacked you have loads of time to do something about it before anything short of a Khaak invasion can do any damage to its massive shields.

Thanks for the replies, the mod sounds very good, but the game is quite complicated already for me! I think I'm getting the hang of things finally though, so I'll maybe use it next time I play through. The comples was set to trade with other races, and I had a freighter bringing the BoFu in. I might try it again sometime but the TLs are so damn slow! I see what you mean about IS/OOS, I discovered it works differently when trying to get the TL to navigate an asteroid field! worked fine while I was OOS but screwed up enormously IS. Have to save up a bit for a pair of M6s and supposrting M3s I think!

In general, beta / gamma weapons are better against larger slower moving ships, whereas the alpha weapons have faster moving projectiles and are more effective against smaller, faster moving ships.

To patrol with a group of ships, set one on patrol and set others to protect that ship.
