Which one in your opinion should i go for and what's the best mobo and ram for the cpu,

Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 2.93GHz Socket LGA775, 4MB, BOXED w/fan = €995.01 inc vat

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 2.67GHz Socket LGA775, 8MB, BOXED w/fan = €975.01 inc vat

If the x6800 costs more i'd get the quad 6700, you won't miss those few hundred MHz less and you get 2 more cores which will be more future proof and will smoke the x6800 when utilised properly. Also if you overclock you'll more than likely make it past 2.93Ghz anyhow ;)

4>2

Once you go quad you wont go back to dual (well I assume, I mean I went Dual core back in the day and have never gone solo)

i know the quad would be great but you always see that games etc are not designed to utilize the 4 cores.

i was swinging to the qx as the prices are so very close

And games aren't optimised for dual cores, will be for both in the future. Get the quad core.

Well there is hardly any games out at the moment that support two cores so you will be waiting a long time to make full use of the quad core. It also depends what type of work you do on your PC.

Quad over Duo, especially if the prices are similar.

You might want to consider a cheaper duo though unless you need quad right now. Perhaps the E6600, you (probably) won't notice the difference once it's overclocked.

What are you using it for?

what mobo and ram would get the best from the quad core, i will be ocing it as i will be watercooling the rig

When games support dual core they will support quad core too, because they will have multi core support.

what do you think of this
Abit IN9 32x-Max Mobo 1333mhz
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 1066mhz
Corsair Dominator Twin 2x8500 2048 DDR2 1066mhz

I will use my current graphics card until the new DX10 ATI ones come out, and my Hiper PSU for the moment.

230 quid for a motherboard?! No sir!

Asus P5N32-E PLUS and GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz will do you nicely for much, much less money.

What is the machine for?

i will be using it for gaming, rendering and generally anything i turn my hand to.

I will pop Vista onto it when sp1 comes out

for anything to do with photoshop or premier or 3d packages you will get better from the quad without doubt. the programmes are designed to be used in workstations with multiple cores.

also games are just starting to be released with multiple core support with Supreme Commander the shining example. more games will be on the horizon soon with valve recoding the HL engine for multiple core support. if you have the money then its a no brainer, if you can think of something else to do with a wad of cash get the 6600 and clock it.

What he said, but there is Supreme Commander which will use four cores apparently... It will dedicate certain tasks to each core. All other games are single threaded.
