x6800 or qx6700

nooooo!!!!! you lot have really mis looked this, the quad core is terrible, it just outperforms the fx62 lol, its only so expensive cos it has 'quad core' technology, which is just another 2 quads wapped on there. i had one, and i swapped it around with my mates 6800 when he came round to prove it dominated, and i was bought...

i replaced my quad with a 6800 days after, the 6800 is THE best cpu avalible, the only reason why the quad is expensive is cos its the first of its design, and if it was done well, then it would be the best performing core... but its not, end of.

get the 6800, its faster, can be clocked up to 3.6 on air (got mine to 3.76 atm on watercooling)

seriously just dont touch the quad, its a marketing stunt "HEY!! look at me, i got 2 cores stuck my my butt!!" there is nothing of major importance that will use its potential for at least a year to come, and by then, they would have made much better quad cores that arnt a quick slap-together.

hope poeple undeerstand my point.

He said he would be doing rendering...so in that case the quad is most definitely the better choice.

Mate, you obviously have some money to throw around, may i suggest a PSU upgrade - That hiper psu.. if the £"%£ hit the fan thats a lot of kit down the drain mate.

just my 2p

True, if he's using some proper software he'll enjoy the 4 cores. You make a good point though ags, for 95% of users quad would be overkill.

Very nice parts sir. At first I thought you'd been ripped off, but thats not too bad for 1200 quid. If you've got the money why not.

I would have got something a little cheaper, but you know what you're doing right? :)

As above, get a good psu and good cooling so you can squeeze a bit more speed out of those 4 cores.

for anything to do with photoshop or premier or 3d packages you will get better from the quad without doubt. the programmes are designed to be used in workstations with multiple cores.

also games are just starting to be released with multiple core support with Supreme Commander the shining example. more games will be on the horizon soon with valve recoding the HL engine for multiple core support. if you have the money then its a no brainer, if you can think of something else to do with a wad of cash get the 6600 and clock it.

Use premier and do a lot of DVD rendering etc.. the Quad 6700 machine i built for work has decreased encode time soooo much from the E6700 it had its crazy. Imagine less than 6 months ago we went from a Prescott 3Ghz rig to all this transition :D oh, guess who got the E6700 for doing work that favour? :D

ah, didnt read fully into the post, i stand corrected, thanks mate :D

but im glad you agree and understand the quad is overkill for anything other than rendering and design sotware.

I'm in the same boat to be honest and still trying to decide on a X6800 or Q6600.

I'll be doing music production, as well as playing games and some encoding.

Also, need a motherboard & ram and will have about £1200 to spend.

I just finished converting a DVD to DivX to upload on Usenet.

I used TPMG which fully utilizes all 4 cores on the Quaddie. To see all 4 cores being used 100% on Windows Task Manager makes me glad I went Quad, plus finishing the job sooooooooo much faster than anything else.

As I said on other thread, all the top end cpu's max out games if you have a good gfx card. After that the question is, will I do ANYTHING else on my pc that takes time waiting on it finish.

if the answer is yes, get a Quaddie, you won't be upset.

imo the o.p wasted his money, id have got a dual core for 150 squid and clocked it to x6800 speed, saved hundreds and buy a quad core when more varieties come q3 this yr i think?, they will be a ton cheaper then aswell, the extra cash spare could have bought u an upcoming x2800xtx more than likely

I am building two machines, one for my office as a test bed, and the other is coming with me for home use.

I dotn think you will be disappointed m8, I was going for the 6800 but they were out of stock at the time and opted for 6700 instead, still pleased with my new setup. It absoluetly flies. Encoding has 2/3rds the time taken off, comapred to my old x2 3800 setup.
