do the newer 360's have quieter disc drives than the older ones? (mine is a year and a bit old) i find my drive way too noisy, and find it hard to concentrate while playing games i.e mass effect or blue dragon. is there anything i can do to make it a bit quieter i.e stick it in the cupboard or something? im fed up with the damn thing sounding like a 747 divebombing. any advice would appreciated! if all else fails im going to try and buy a new one, see if they are quieter. cheers :)

apparently the BenQ drives are quieter, but ive not experienced one so I cannot comment personally.

I'd advise against putting your xbox 360 in a cupboard, unless its air conditioned ;)

I've had 4 360's, everyone with a Hitachi drive.

1st one (launch console) sounded like a jet engine, 2nd, 3rd, 4th were all the same drive as the 1st but were miles quieter. I can barely hear it.

i've had 3 my new hdmi one seems quite dunno if just use to it though. dont see big deal i play comp with sound turned up so dont notice the console .

Using the iXtreme DVD firmware you can adjust the drive speed from 12x down to 5x or 8x. I use 8x and it is a nice tradeoff between speed and noise. Doesnt have any noticeable effect on games. I think you can do this on Benq, Hitachi and Samsung drives.

I bought an Elite in October with the non-Falcon chipset and it still makes an unholy racket. Saying that though, the PS3's fan can be just as bad when it gets going after just a few minutes of watching HD video.

ok thanks. i'll look into this as an option.

It's still luck of the draw.
Yep. This launch day machine is silent on all accounts, but stick PGR3 in there and the drive gets really noisy. Bit strange that, because no other game causes the drive to whine.

Even on my own launch console (which was noisier than the one I have had it replaced with) PGR3 was the worst culprit in terms of excessive spinning of the disc.

The disk is probably out of balance

i dont use XBL anyway so being banned from it isnt really an issue... im sick and tired of the noise, the only other option is to have the xbox in another room and feed the audio/video cables into my room to my telly, i think the wireless controller will still get signal through a plaster wall.

It makes me laugh that people get so annoyed at the noise. Do you play with your TV/Speakers on mute or something? Even when I have mine at a lowish level I still am so engrossed in the game I don't notice any noise from the console.

What if you ever need to update a game? :(

Extra content?! Think of GTAIV, THINK!!

I guess he can always flash it back to normal firmware. The noise annoys me, but I don't want to in anyway invalidate my 3 year RROD warranty, which i am sure will be needed during it's lifespan.

I personally wouldn't take the risk and just move the 360 somewhere less audible.
