xb360 noise level

It makes me laugh that people get so annoyed at the noise. Do you play with your TV/Speakers on mute or something? Even when I have mine at a lowish level I still am so engrossed in the game I don't notice any noise from the console.

Why does it make you laugh? I turn music off in games so there is silent periods where you just heard sound fx and the noise of the machine is annoying. A lot of people watch media from it, I don;t know any films where there is no silent bits, and the noise of the console kills any immersion you have in the film etc.

A lot of people on this forum, I guess, live at home, so cranking up the speakers at night is not an option. (I even remember playing somsoen from here on Live, only to hear his mum tell him to turn the noise down at 2am in the morning ;) )

For the others its a case of, my "last gen console was not loud" so this is a new, possibly perceived unnecessary, annoyance for them.

I suspect the people who are less annoyed by the noise are the type who are into overclocking or leave their PCs on 24/7 so the noise is not bad compared to that. Compared to all previous and current consoles I have owned (and some top end PCs) it is loud. End of.

i suppose if i could extend my cables to go up into the loft then down into my room then it would be problem solved, whether or not i can get cables long enough to do that is another thing. the noise of the console takes away the atmosphere for me i guess.

ive found if you extend vga cables (not too sure about component) too much the pic quality suffers. I should think hdmi would be fine though.

What is your plan though? To have the 360 in a different room? Wont changing the game become a massive hassle ?

Id vote you just flash the drive it makes it virtually silent.

Component, VGA and HDMI will all suffer at long distances, all depends how long a cable you need (upto 5M should not be an issue as long as you get semi decent shielded cables). Decent shielded Component extenders and VGA over 5M may cost more. For HDMI I am not so sure, but I reckon it could be pricey too, over 5M.

Not, it definitely wasn't. If you only play legit games you currently can't be caught.

As long as the games you "obtain" have been patched (which they all have on my newsgroup listings) you can play non-legit ones fine too, my friend does this.

He has yet to be banned from Live, unfortunately my modded 360 was. :p :(

Ah right, So it's not the firmware, Rather the fact the disk is a backup that kills the pirate. Or should I say Killed the pirate:p

Correct, although MS occasionally change the requests they make to the optical drive and a new firmware is released to combat this.

my old console red ringed a few days ago and I got a falcon one as a replacement. To be honest its not that much quieter than my old 2006 console.

Same here, its just a pettty complaint really IMO, my Dreamcast is much louder and higher pitched.

Dreamcast? No way that thing is nowhere near as loud as a 360.

My cousins 360 is louder than my PC. He has my old 360 the banned one (Nov 2005 MFR), I never noticed how loud it was, my last 360 was much quieter (Aug 2007 MFR).

Sure it is, when was the last time you had a dreamcast on? even the drive is louder than 360

Years ago but I don't remember it being loud at all, the first standout loud console I've had was the 360, it's the only console where I've noticed the noise considerably.

the old dreamcast i have in the boys room is no way near the same level as my 360, and yes the 360 is annoying when your playing with headphones on yet my Mrs moaning that the 360 is making too much noise whilst she watches her programs, so how anyone can say "it makes me laugh" when its a common complaint.

Well I still have mine setup and honestly its louder for me, and a higher pitched whine from the fans and the drive is much more noisy, granted that might be because it is getting on a bit however, but neither console really bothers me, I stream movies from my 360, if I really need to watch in silence then I used headphones :)

indeed. i hope they fix it in a firmware update. i know the drive can spin slower,i was playing gears of war once. the drive was at full speed, then it slowed right down to almost a stop, but the game carried on playing and loading fine. oh well! not a lot i can do. ill stick with it i guess.

After having lived through a few 360's and hearing friends with new Falcon and Elite models I've not heard any that seemed any quieter.

The solution I came up with was an enclosed cabinet. Games like Mass Effect were unbearable with the constant high speed disk reading on my old glass shelf unit, now with my 360 locked away like a bloody noisy monster I can hear a barely audible humming.
