hi

ive got a xbox360 but im worried that one day i will get the ring of death , when the 360 elite comes out , do you think they might have solved a lot of the problems such as the ring of death?

as im thinking of getting one but also for the new features?

cheers

If they've listened to the community then hopefully the elite will come with higher quality construction and components, so it shouldn't be as bad as the 360.

However, only time will tell..

I wouldn't go buying one expecting it to be made differently until someone cracks it open and has a gander :o

I believe they stated that they found a solution to most of the 3ROD when they released info on the 3yr limited warranty, so if you get an Elite manufactured after the announcement it should be free from that flaw. Not 100% sure if they sorted it before making the first lot of elites.

i will stick with my 360 :)

i got my 360 from the BIG pc store about 2 years ago if i recall, if something went wrong with it do you think i could take it back for replacement or would i have to do it through xbox?

cheers

You will probably only have a 1 year warranty from the shop, however, I think you could argue against the sale of goods act that it should last longer blah blah.

Best to ask the shop if it dies, and send if off to MS if they're being arsey :)

You'd be much better off doing it through Microsoft as they'd replace/repair it for you free of charge if you got the ring of death, whereas going through the retailer you'd only get a replacement/partial refund if you could prove it had an inherent fault.

why are you worried? all 360's now have a 3 years warrenty
jeesh it makes me laugh when I hear this reply. Obviously nobody has any right to have any concerns at all now that MS have given the console a three year warranty. Ok, so you need to actually ring MS and probably wait a few hours to get through then box it up, send it off and wait over a month for it to be returned - then you need to call back and shout at them to get your lost months worth of Xbox Live membership returned.

They could give them a ten year warranty but I would imagine that people will still be concerned in case theris actually breaks.

I never said he doesnt have the right to be concerned, just that I dont understand why he has them, no need to get all anal about it

And nobody knows whether the European release of the Elite with have the improvements, you will just have to wait and see

yes there does seem to be a few people who get very Anal about things on here, i hope its not catching?? :(
Fanboyism? Slightly I think :)

As for the Elite - I don't think its internals will be any different from a Premium built on the same day. Once they shift to the new architecture I expect all units to be using the new improved internals. That said the elite mobo is slightly different (from what I have heard), but they might use the elite MOBO on all units and disable the HDMI on non elites - economies of scale would be had so that would make sense.

I don't think the elite is worth the extra cash for what you get but I'll still get one once I am 100% sure that it is using the new internals and the garage conversion is complete.

I take it that fanboy comment is aimed at me being as though it was spawned from my post?

I have said many times that I think the 360 is a good console, and I even had one for a while but got rid of it because I dont have time to play all the games I have on two consoles. I just think that some of you on here are somewhat blinkered to bad customer service and think the problem has gone away just because MS 'Finally' extanded the warranty to 3 years.

When you say "the problem has gone away" what is the problem?
Is the problem that the early 360's stand a greater risk of going belly up than they should do? The early PS2s suffered significant quality issues but that has not stopped them selling in their millions. Later PS2s were much better than early PS2s.
MS have made an incredibly generous warranty offer. If you buy one and it goes wrong they'll sort you out with a repair or a new one. You simply can't say fairer than that. Sure I'd prefer a cast iron guarantee of a working console but I and doubtless many, many others are delighted with the 3 year warranty. IF it goes wrong I'm covered. Chances are it'll be replaced with a new improved one too.

So what is the "BAD" customer service that people have received from MS? I don't think that anyone has recieved "bad" customer service and how does MS reaction to the 360 failures compare to the PS2 laser issues?

The problem is only just being fixed though isn't it and it's been out for well over 18 months already. It was only very recently that MS actually admitted that there is a inherant fault in all systems even though the evidence has been there for quite a long time with some staggering failure rates for any peice of electrical consumer hardware. If you were to buy a retail unit today the chances are it would still be a defective unit so rather than do a recall to fix the problem they have left them on shleves and plan to phase in the new updates over time.

Even though they knew there was a design fault they still insisted on charging people £80+ to return the unit for repair if the 12 month warranty had expired.

I personally think the whole thing is a farse - this isn't some cheap peice of crap electronics from china we are talking about it's an expensive games console made by the biggest company in the world which was rushed to market to gain market share.

I know you have two 360's so i hope you enjoy keeping score of the amount of times you have to return them to MS over the next three years ;)

I also remember them saying they are rufunding people who paid to have it repaired. This problem was never going to go away over night and just how much testing would it have taken to find this design flaw? not days, not weeks but months upon months, which there wasnt time for so they had little way of knowing that this was going to happen in the future. They've learned from this mistake and now they are paying for it.

So 18 months to do something about it isnt that unreasonable, since most of the 360's were dying around their first full year (except the first batch of course).

And bad customer service? Sorry but I disagree. I had mine break on a Saturday, I called them up and got straight through (indian call centre), and the woman on the other end was very helpful (she even spoke better English then some people from this country!), took around 15 mins to log all my data into their database and arrange for delivery. The console was picked up Monday (not Sunday for obvious reasons) and was returned to me Wednesday morning the same week. I hardly call a 2 day turn around time unreasonable, infact it was brilliant. The console I got back is even better then my original it runs cooler, the DVD drive is quieter and it no longer freezes.

Im not saying MS have handled this whole problem perfectly but they arent as bad as you are making them out to be.
